The Synchronized Swimming Chicks

When the Captain is away commercial fishing for salmon near the Queen Charlotte Islands (now called Haida Gwaii), he has limited access to town with its grocery stores and restaurants. He and his deckhand are away from civilization for about a week at a time and so he has to think ahead what he would like to cook on the boat.

On this day, it was spaghetti, but rather than have the same old boring spaghetti sauce, the Captain remembered a friend who always added a whole chicken to her spaghetti sauce. Her spaghetti was always very tasty, so he thought he’d try her method. Not having a whole chicken, the Captain thawed out a pack of chicken drumsticks that he had in the boat’s tiny chest freezer.

One by one, he dropped the chicken legs into the spaghetti sauce. They all turned the same way, with the heavier end downwards and voilà, the Captain had his own team of chicks doing synchronized swimming.

133We’re just waiting for the judges to hold up the scorecards.

    • Haha! This is where he and I differ. If I had been in that kitchen, the chicken skins would have come off. (Boat food for boat people!) But I do like them on when we bake them in the oven.

    • Thanks for the 10, Robin. If I had been on the boat with the Captain, those chicken legs would have gone into the spaghetti sauce skinless, but then maybe, being naked without their skins, they would have been too shy to do their synchronized swimming.
