What is it?

It looks like a comet, but it’s not. It looks like a splotch on the truck window or the camera lens, but it’s not. As I drove past, I had to admit that the thing that might have been a sun with a halo,… wasn’t …

  1. Might be some ice crystals up there that lined up just right to give you that bit of rainbow. Just a wild guess. Pretty! 🙂

  2. I saw something similar at the ocean right before a tropical storm moved in. I assumed it was a rainbow.

  4. Thank you, Vicki! Pat guessed the ice crystals and she was right too, but I didn’t know this was called a sun dog. Great to know what I was looking at. It’s the first time I’ve seen anything like this. On the wiki site it mentioned that one of the causes could be cold air drifting in at low levels and that is exactly what was happening here.

  7. Interesting post and discussion. I’ve never heard of sun dogs before. I wonder if there are moon cats or star rabbits.

  9. So it’s a sundog? For sure? (Yes, I read the comments haha). I’ve never heard of any such thing! I always learn something new over here, Anneli.

  10. I call these “sun-bows,” Anneli! I took one of these but heard the drops of moisture in the sky create enough to reflect the sun like a rainbow. Love this great photo and your speculation, including a comet! 🙂
