What is it?

It looks like a comet, but it’s not. It looks like a splotch on the truck window or the camera lens, but it’s not. As I drove past, I had to admit that the thing that might have been a sun with a halo,… wasn’t …

unless there are two suns. Maybe it’s a mini rainbow on the edge of a cloud?dscn6506

Thank you, Vicki! Pat guessed the ice crystals and she was right too, but I didn’t know this was called a sun dog. Great to know what I was looking at. It’s the first time I’ve seen anything like this. On the wiki site it mentioned that one of the causes could be cold air drifting in at low levels and that is exactly what was happening here.

There very well could be. 😉 Probably they’re called sun dogs because they “dog” the sun (follow behind it).
So what would a moon cat be doing? Sitting on a fencepost backlit by the moon while he sings the song of his people (as Henri the cat puts it when he yowls around cats in heat). Star rabbits, well, we already have Bugs. He’s a star rabbit.

I call these “sun-bows,” Anneli! I took one of these but heard the drops of moisture in the sky create enough to reflect the sun like a rainbow. Love this great photo and your speculation, including a comet! 🙂
