Ghost Town

As we drove down the hill into Coulee City, a small town at one end of a dam on the Columbia River, we talked about our planned tortilla supper. We had bought all the ingredients but had forgotten the onions. No problem. We would find a grocery store and pick up a few.

It was hard to find a downtown core in this small town. No grocery store in sight. Well, let’s ask someone. But whom? The place was like a ghost town.dscn6513

Not a soul in sight on any of the streets. At last we found two kids playing in front of their house. We called them over to ask if there was a grocery store in town and where it might be. As the little boy came closer to the truck to answer our questions, I wanted to say, “Don’t come any closer. Don’t you know it’s dangerous to get too close to strangers asking for directions?” At the same time, although I needed help in finding the store, I thought how sad that we need to fear for our children’s safety like this.

We followed the little boy’s directions and found out where all the townspeople were. They were at the store! All four of them.

Coulee City is a very small town, but it’s a great place to stay if you’re camping. Well … usually it is. For a wild night in Coulee City, check out anĀ earlier postĀ https://wordsfromanneli.com/2015/11/09/storm-at-coulee-city/
