Flying a drone, or UAV (an unmanned aerial vehicle), would probably appeal to anyone who liked building model airplanes and flying them around their backyard. I think that except for the noise, I might enjoy flying one too.
Most of them have cameras in or on them and probably can take some fantastic pictures from perspectives that are next to impossible for us to achieve any other way.
BUT. What if you are on the other end of the drone’s intrusion? Here is one that is coming towards my house. What does it want?
Who is going to look at the images that drone is taking? What are they looking for? I’m sure it’s nothing sinister … or am I really so sure…?
It’s coming closer. I don’t remember inviting it into my space.
Now its beady little red eyes are scanning everything in my personal space, taking pictures of what’s going on in my yard. Maybe its camera can take pictures through the windows of my house. Who knows?
If I happen to be in the shower next time the drone comes by, I hope someone warns me not to step out until it moves on.
I confess to having a very irky feeling when the drone buzzed back and forth near my house and property. I kept thinking the drone was like the 13th fairy who came, uninvited, to Sleeping Beauty’s birthday party, bringing her an evil gift.
I understand they are used for 3D jobs – those that are too Dull, Dirty, or Dangerous – but my house is not (yet) a war zone, and I already feel like the drone was doing less than noble spying.
I know that drone-lovers are going to say I’m just a sour grape, but really, I don’t wish to own one and use it to go impose on someone’s privacy, so why would I want someone to do that to me?
And of course there are drone owners who have not the slightest wish to spy on anyone. Still ….
How do you feel about drones? Maybe your experience with them is different from mine. Tell us about it!

Mag ich gar nicht. Ein bischen persönlicher Einsatz beim Fotografieren ist doch Kunst.. Niemals eine Drohne.

No, more like “Pit on a hot tin roof” – even only a small part of our roof here is tin!

In Karnes City, the roof of our old barn was all tin:

I’d love one for taking aerial shots of ancient sites, except that, at many of them, it is not allowed. But that would be my limit. Near homes, I find them invasive.

Yes, that would be great – at ancient sites – but those are usually in the kinds of places where the 3Ds drones would be needed, and I’m not generally a big fan of those.

I can see where they’d be useful in certain situations like inspecting damage after a natural disaster, etc. Apart from that, I’m not a fan. Last summer, I was enjoying our patio and working on my manuscript when one hovered right over me. I freaked out and ran inside.

I’m with Jill on this one. They can be useful for certain situations, but flying over private property should not be allowed. I saw that Pobept commented about using a firearm, which was the first thing that came to my mind, but when you can’t use one to fire in the neighborhood, how bout a BB gun? A sling shot? Maybe get proficient in archery? Of course, I’m all talk, but I might throw rocks.
My dad has a drone. He has a large pocket of land in Wisconsin, and he uses it to surveille his OWN PROPERTY. He doesn’t spy on others on their property.

My shot gun has a maximum effective range of about 50 yards, 150 feet. If a drone is within the range of my shotgun, it is trespassing and will be in need of extensive repairs. That is if the owner can find what remains of his/her drone.
Grin I may shoot a drone twice just to be sure the damn thing is no longer transmitting pictures of me or my property.
Happy Gardening

I sure don’t like them in my space, but then I thought of something I should have added to the post – that they do have a good use when they help find hikers who are lost. But still, I don’t need them around my house. I’m not lost. I’m with you on the slingshot idea.

The best thing about drones is that they are vulnerable to long-barrelled 12 gauge drone-wreckers.

They do have their uses, but frankly, outside of forest fire control zones and the police and military, who needs them? They are expensive toys for the bored and irresponsible. And, as a pilot I see them as very dangerous.

I use drones at work. But having one flying around your personal property, I think that’s not right. You should have called the cops. They could be casing your house. You know what I mean?

In this case, I think they were trying to get pictures for the house next door that was for sale, but the thing was too close to me. Way too close. But yes, you’re right. There is yet another case for drones – checking out places to “knock over.”

Yes, we treasure our privacy. But yesterday I looked at the local news online and I saw that someone (police, I think) was using a drone to reconstruct a car accident scene, so I was again made aware that there are good uses for drones. If they would only stick to the good uses!!

For the children receiving emergency medical supplied dropped from a drone in remote parts of Africa, its a lifesaver.
As with all new technologies, there is potential for bad in the wrong hands, but there is also the potential for lots of good. We need to figure out how to get more of the good and less of the bad.
