Four favourites are growing in my garden (along with many other favourites that have finished blooming).
The hollyhock is amazing me this year with its flowers and the height of its stalk. It must be at least ten feet tall.
The lily doesn’t bloom for long but is so pretty.
And who doesn’t love the sunflowers which, the Captain hopes, will provide seeds to salt and toast? They are a necessity for cracking and chewing and spitting out while waiting for the fish to bite.
One of my special favourites is the snapdragon. My first experience with snapdragons was when I was a very little girl in Germany and my mother showed me how these flowers could open their mouths. They’re not called snapdragons in German but Loewenmaeulchen (little lions’ mouths), and if you press the sides of the flower together, it opens up like a mouth. As a child I was fascinated by this idea of a little lion flower opening its mouth. Of course in Canada they are dragons who open their mouths to snap.
Do you have favourite flowers in your garden?

I don’t have a garden at the moment but I love daisies. 🙂

They are easy keepers and very pretty. They bloom a long time, too.

Thanks, DK. The best part of summer is the flowers. I feel like I want to say “are the flowers” but “the best part are” doesn’t work.

Your flowers are gorgeous, Anneli. I love the lily! Some of my favorites are red geraniums and red vincas.

I don’t know this red vinca plant. I jut looked it up and it says it’s like a periwinkle (I know that one), and I think it would make a great plant to have growing in certain places where you don’t want to fuss every year. It seems to come back on its own. Is that right?

I think there are some that are perennials, but I buy the hot weather annuals. We have trailing vincas hanging in pots from our arbor, it’s very nice.

Oh yeah! I forgot about sweet peas. They are one of my favourites too, but I don’t have very good luck growing them.

Your flowers are beautiful and look very healthy. My favorite flower is the Echinacea (I´ve sent you a picture of them recently.)

I’ve been trying for years to get them to grow for me, and this time a friend gave me some small started ones. I’ve tied them loosely to my garden fence so they don’t get knocked down by the wind and they are thanking me now.

I’m hoping it will get much bigger but even so, it’s the best I’ve ever had (as an amateur sunflower grower).

Wish I had your green thumb. I planted flowers for the first time in my life this year. My mini rose bush is a blooming beauty. My begonias and geraniums are doing great, too, but I’m especially proud of and in love with the roses. However, my daisies died. 😞
My favorite flowers are lilacs though. Last year we had landscapers plant a lilac bush, but it didn’t bloom this year. There were very few lilac blooms anywhere this year, here.
How’s the garden growing? Maybe you could share a post showing some veggies. Our garden is overgrown with tomato plants, a few we didn’t even plant!

I suppose I could show a few things that grew well. A lot of things didn’t even come up, so don’t worry if you aren’t totally successful at first. I’ve been doing this for years and I still have a lot of failures, depending on the weather, timing, the seeds, my (lack of) dedication, etc. Every year is a learning experience.

I think my friends and neighbours shake their heads when they see my garden. Any and all flowers (except dandelions) are allowed to grow wherever they want. So I can relate to your favourite being anything that blooms.

It is glorious summer when you have four favorite flowers blooming at once…how very special. I really like that you shared these four special beauties with us, Anneli, and a little about each one. Waiting for the fish to bite while enjoying your homegrown sunflower seeds brought a smile to my face. And I love the snapdragon story. Wonderful post, thank you.
