I couldn’t resist trying for more photos again this morning when the nuthatches came back for breakfast.
Granola with sunflower seeds is on the menu today.
I might have to go have some of that myself.
I do make my own granola but so far I’ve been using store bought sunflower seeds. Looks like I’ll be buying them again this year unless I want to deprive the birds of their breakfast.

Thanks for your patience. I was so frustrated that they were so fast and were often hidden under the big sunflower leaves. I had to try again.

How interesting to see them feeding on the sunflowers! We have a different species of nuthatch here which is very much a woodland bird (although it likes birdfeeders a lot) and often eats beech nuts. It jams them into cracks in tree bark and hammers them open. While hanging upside down, naturally…
Apparently the name comes from ‘nut hack’, which describes this behaviour.

And now that it’s not a novelty for them anymore, they’re getting braver and staying longer so I could probably get a better picture, but I think two posts about them is enough.
