Thief in Broad Daylight

I was slow getting out there to pick up the hazelnuts that the wind knocked down. The rain might have had something to do with my laziness.

“Anyway,” I reasoned, “the first ones to fall are the bad ones or the empty shells. I’ll wait a day or two.”

MISTAKE!!

A thief in the night cleaned me out.

Today, in broad daylight, my suspicions were confirmed.

“LINCOLN THE DELINQUENT WAS BACK!”

See how sneakily he hustled to hide behind the nut tree when he heard the click of my camera?

But after a while, he felt safe enough to come out into the open and brazenly eat one of the hundreds of hazelnuts he had stolen.

Another click of my faraway camera and he scurried over to hide behind a low-hanging branch of the hazelnut tree.

“She can’t see me here,” he said to himself. “She’ll never guess how many I already have tucked away. Hee hee. But to show some goodwill, I left her a bunch.”

“I know, Lincoln. Thanks for nothing. Those were all the rotten ones!”

  4. Ha. Lincoln is storing up for winter. Is it getting colder there yet? It’s still pretty warm here. 25c t0 27c.

    • I presume those temperatures are in centigrade. Right now we have 10 degrees, low cloud, and heavy drizzle. Not that nice, but at least it’s not windy just now. The nights will be between 8 and 12 degrees this week. I should be thankful it’s not worse. I hear that some of the interior areas might get some white stuff on the weekend. Brrr. But here on the coast it’s mostly just rain. Bad enough when it’s cool rain. Enjoy your last warm days of the season, and happy equinox.

  5. Lincoln is so very sweet, as sweet as our different Lincolns which visit our garden. The hazelnuts fall down from the hill above our garden so the table is all set for them. We love to watch all those different coloured squirrels. Very lovely pictures!

    • Thanks for the nice comment, Ursula. I’m glad to hear that you have the squirrels too. I know they have a bad reputation for stealing and eating birds’ eggs, but I can’t help it. I do love my “Lincolns.”

  11. What a stinker! I have squirrels and raccoons that have eaten the few apples produced by my trees this year. I’ve been eyeing one on a low branch. Now that I’ve read this, I had better go pick it!

  12. They LOVE hazelnuts, Anneli. You should see Douglas (our furry friend) doing his acrobatics to collect them from our tree. He and Lincoln would make a good team. Wonderful photos. 🙂

  13. Lincoln the Delinquent – I love it! We have a species called the red squirrel on this side of the pond, but it’s very different from the North American red. Most squirrels in the UK are the eastern grey squirrel, introduced here a century ago.

I once made the mistake of feeding them on a window ledge. All was well until one day I left the window open. Came back to find a squirrel had slipped indoors and jumped into a 20KG sack of birdfood, munching away with joy!
