It’s snowing furiously and the wind has made a mess of the yard, littering it with fir branches.
It’s cold enough to freeze the hummingbird feeders. I alternate between two of them, thawing one in a jug of warm water while the other is available to the birds.
The squirrels, Lincoln and Della, have been getting walnuts (partially shelled) and sunflower seeds. But now the jays have discovered the goodies in the woodshed and are giving the squirrels competition.
The video below is about a minute long. I took it from inside the house through the window. The snow is blurring the scene as much as my dirty dining room window is, but I didn’t want to miss the show. It’s not Oscar quality, but it might be mildly entertaining to watch as Lincoln defends his lunch.

As it’s not cold here [we are having the typical Texas Hill Country “winter”] our squirrels and birds find enough food and water. Well, we do put out bird seed and fill the bird baths. But we don’t need to warm the water.

It’s always nice to be able to see the birds up close and even if they have enough food, it’s a good idea to have water available.

It’s a battle for survival in the cold of winter! They are so cute running and hopping about. It’s so wonderful that you keep the humming bird feeders going Anneli. 🥰😎

I feel so sorry for those little hummingbirds. They should have gone south, but most winters it’s mild enough here, so I guess they got complacent.

Poor Lincoln! And poor hummingbirds too! They weren’t expecting this! 🙂

No, I’m sure they thought it was bad last week in the cold wind and rain, but this is so terrible for them (when the sugar water freezes in the feeders)!

I didn’t realize you have hummingbirds year around, Anneli. I might have to knit them some jackets…well, if I could knit. 🙂

That would be good if they had a little jacket. I feel so sorry for them.

There’s nothing like a bluejay/squirrel confrontation, that’s for sure. I’m hearing bluejays just from time to time, but I’m hoping that they’ll show up at the feeders once the acorns and pecans on the trees are gone.

It used to be that the jays would show up when the hazelnuts were ripe but now they seem to be around all year. Same with the hummingbirds – they never used to stay for the winter.

Great video! I hope that Lincoln won the battle! The jay can go and get some seeds at the birdfeeders.

Yes, the jay was quite aggressive (or hungry) but Lincoln got the better of him. You’re so right – the jay can get food anywhere.

Winter has certainly arrived there. Lincoln is pretty good on defence 😊

I was surprised how tough the squirrels are for such a small creature.

Jays can be very bold, sometimes mean. Good to see Lincoln guarding the nuts.
