After weeks and weeks of cold, sunless days of wind, rain, and even some snow, is it any wonder we get desperate as we anticipate spring weather?
I was unreasonably happy when I noticed these daffodil leaves poking through the winter’s mess.
I’m hoping that by the time it’s Easter, the daffodils will bloom and announce that our winter ordeal is over.
Daffodils are tough. They are among the first flowers to put out feelers to gauge the temperature above that layer of fall leaves.
Can I come out yet?
And is the snow gone?
Will I be frozen
While waiting for dawn?
Gather your courage,
My buddies all say,
Be brave together
And we’ll win the day.
First we may shiver,
But then you will see,
The sun will shine longer
For you and for me.
Set up your blossoms
To open in spring,
Yellow and cheerful
Is just the right thing.
We are the bravest
The gutsiest here,
Being the first to bring
Snippets of cheer.
Sooooooooon!
I cheated here and put in a photo of daffodils from another year, but they are the same ones that belong to those green stems in the previous photo.
Daffodils have a special place in my heart. My mother loved flowers and when, as a new Canadian, she learned the name of these flowers, she couldn’t help always mixing up the syllables. To this day I think of them as daffy dolls, her name for them.

Oh Lord yes, everyone loved Dora! It’s been 8 years since mum passed, I still cry.

I know how it is. I thought I was over it after about 20 years and I started to tell some little story about her and got choked up all over again. It’s 38 years now (she died young) and I can talk about her now, but it wasn’t easy for a long time. Still, I know I was lucky to have had someone that’s worth crying over.

Daffy Dolls are definitely a sign of spring which means you should be getting warmer weather soon.

Thanks, Jill. She had a great sense of humour, but she didn’t realize what she was saying when she mixed up daffodils.

I can’t wait until they bloom and it starts to get genuinely warm. I don’t need hot. Just warm will make me happy. And yes, I do still chuckle about Daffy Dolls.

Nice thought Anneli. Those daffy dolls certainly speak of the coming season. How are you?

Great to see you here, Arlene. You can’t imagine how happy it made me to see those few green leaves of the “daffy dolls” coming through. We’re all so tired of winter here. After our cold snowy week, it blew and rained, but now the wind has switched again and it’s very cold with a promise of more flurries. Hail yesterday! I want spring and blossoms and warm days. I suppose you have enough warm days where you are, but didn’t you have some awful storms this fall?

Wonderful spring, how nice to look forward to it. For the past three nights here it was so cold but the days are always sunny. We have the trade winds the whole month of February.

I am always so happy to see the daffodils start to poke through the snow. Lovely poem and perfectly timed to help us get through the rest of winter, 🙂

Oh no! We don’t want more snow! It’s in our forecast too, but just for a day or so. Just enough to make life miserable for the birds and Lincoln and Della (the squirrels).

Those flowers are from another year, but of the same actual plants. The real (this year’s) ones will happen one of these days.
