What a feast these berries make,
No one says how much to take.
Guess I’ll eat them while I can,
I’m becoming quite a fan.
First I wondered ’bout the flavour,
Now I just can’t wait to savour,
All the berries growing here,
At their best this time of year.
Down the street the mountain ash
Berries fell down just like trash,
Down they fell, kerplunk, kerplunk.
Robins ate them and got drunk.
Not so good for flying straight,
Easy to become owl bait.
I will stick to pyracantha
Cuz for me it is the antha.

Great photos, Anneli! I wonder what the bird ate?

The towhee was eating pyracantha berries, which are okay, but the robin that flew into my window was probably drunk on mountain ash (rowan) berries.

Yup! The berries fall off the trees and on those warm days they decompose (and ferment) and the birds get drunk. I had a robin hit my window (just didn’t want to post the dead bird picture), and they are what usually eats the mountain ash berries. There are a lot of smooshed berries on the ground just a couple of houses down from here. The rest is guesswork, but it is a documented fact about drunk birds and mountain ash berries.

It’s so nice of you to say so, but you probably shouldn’t be encouraging me to write this goofy poetry. The Captain just rolls his eyes.

Thank you, Cindy. I do feel bad for the birds that get drunk on the mountain ash berries. It’s mostly the robins that get into those.

I tried for days to catch a picture of him eating these berries, but he was always quick to fly away. Thanks for the visit, Ursula.

Right now he is. I hope he gets nice and fat to make it through the winter in comfort. He’s sure happy now.

Love the photos of the towhee. They are such entertaining birds to watch. Your new camera provides amazing clarity or perhaps it is the skilled photographer!

How fun seeing him enjoy a meal. I guess they don’t get stomach aches from eating too many berries?

I suppose we have to share them on the blog posts. You have cardinals, which I love, but have never seen a live one.

We didn’t have cardinals in Florida, so it’s a treat to see them again after 27 years.
