“I could hardly wait for my breakfast of sunflower seeds this morning, folks. It was darned chilly overnight and I needed a few heat calories.”

“While Lincoln takes a break to go chase Della around the woodshed, I’m going to sneak a few sunflower seeds. But oh my goodness, they’re big. I wonder if I bit off more than I can chew.”

“Did you see that sneaky thief getting into my stash? I only turned my back for a few seconds to go tell Della that breakfast is served, and that foxy sparrow was into my food. I’m going to have to put some of these away for a rainy day.”

“Not too far away, and still under the roof. That will keep it dry.”

“Now stay! — I’ve seen Anneli do this with Emma. She points her fingers at her and says, ‘Stay!’ I’ll do what she does. Cool, eh?”

“Silly Lincoln. Every time he goes to bury a sunflower seed, I can zip right in here and help myself to his breakfast. Oh well, survival of the fittest (and smartest – that’s me). There’s a reason they call me a fox sparrow.”

Sharing shelter, that’s okay,

Sometimes it works out that way,

Sharing food’s another thing,

Since it can starvation bring.

Oh, all right, I get fed well,

But when seeds are in their shell,

It takes time to eat them up,

In my hands shaped like a cup.

Then along comes foxy sparrow,

Sitting on the jar rim narrow,

Helps himself to food that’s mine,

No permission here to dine.

Go ahead then, help yourself,

Sitting there upon my shelf,

I will have to be more wary,

Sunflower seeds I now must bury.

  1. That sparrow is so cute! And the seed does seem too big.
Nice to see that Lincoln is doing well and has come through the winter in fine fettle. šŸ™‚

  3. I read a book by a naturalist who spent several years watching the daily lives of squirrels, etc. I wondered how he could do that but I think you know. What you notice about Lincoln and Co. is amazing.

  4. As John, above, says – and as I’ve said before, great photography Anneli. You have a real photographer’s instinct – and it is an instinct – for ‘the moment’. And please tell me what that bird is that heads up your posts these days – the little chap with the orange bill and what looks like a folded back crest.

  6. We purposely keep the squirrels away from the bird feeder here. They can have the scraps on the ground. Looks like Lincoln and the birdies are all well fed at Anneli’s place. šŸ™‚

    • The woodshed is on the other side of the house from where I keep the main feeders (although I did have bird feeders in the woodshed too at the coldest time of the winter). Generally the squirrels stay near the woodshed and the tall firs that are all around that part of the yard, while most of the birds stay near the bird feeders that are near the shrubbery at the other side. One or two birds have figured out that Lincoln gets some pretty nice treats and they’ve come to help themselves, but the squirrels don’t return the visits to the other side of the yard. So far, it hasn’t been a problem, but we do have space to allow for separate feeding stations.

  8. Lincoln is spoiled, eating out in a 5 Star outdoor restaurant. Your photos are great, Anneli, and so is your imagination! ā¤

    • He does get fed quite well. Thanks for your kind words, Carol. I was just out there to refill the sunflower seed jar and a very small squirrel was there. I think it is one of Lincoln’s babies from last spring. I may have started something….
