I’d been reading a book in my living room. The sun shone in through the window and I dozed off with its warmth on the back of my neck.
I woke to the sound of someone dragging a big metal appliance across the concrete outside the downstairs family room. Emma barked like crazy to tell me that someone was burgling the house.
I ran out onto the deck to see what was going on. I saw nothing, but I heard the noise again. Strange!
The metallic rattling came again and I looked up towards the sound.
A flicker was sitting on the top of the new flue to the gas fireplace.
Just listen to his drumming!

This is so funny, Anneli! Such a beautiful bird too. I also have a metal cover over the top of my chimney and occasionally a bird or birds land on it, I can hear them in my living room as I sit near the fireplace. This bird sounds a little like a jackhammer breaking up concrete. ❤️😂

As long as he doesn’t make a habit of it, I don’t mind. But yes, it was loud!

That is really loud, Anneli! Any way to retrain him?

I guess if I hadn’t wanted to get the picture, I could have put my camera down and shooed him away. This is the first time I’ve noticed him/her doing that.

Lol! I love it! I’d let him make noise…unless it was the middle of the night.😉

Luckily the flickers are not nocturnal!

Thanks for sharing that video – what a sound! I think it will stop once he’s found a mate. And that amazingly blue sky! Gorgeous.

That’s funny because both the weird metal drumming and the blue sky were rare things around here.

How woodpeckers like to be noisy! The louder, the better to claim their territory. Great shots, Anneli!

It’s only because he’s tapping on the metal flue. He’s a woodpecker. I guess he’s not fussy whether it’s wood or metal, as long as the drumming announces him.

Fun video, thanks for sharing. Maybe he finds a mate and then they can drum together.

I hope so. There are other flickers around so I’m sure he’ll find what he’s looking for.

From inside the house it sounded like a metal appliance being dragged on concrete.
