Log Cabin Quilt

With all the rain we’ve had, I was taking a chance when I hung the freshly washed quilt on the line outside. I was hoping that the trees that form a canopy overhead would save it from any serious raindrops.

As I walked past the quilt, I noticed it for the first time in ages. Sure I’ve seen it on my bed  many times, but I hadn’t paid much attention to it. Here, in a different location, I saw it with new eyes. I thought of all the strips of fabric I had cut to their exact lengths, and the way I sorted them out.

The name log cabin quilt is a bit misleading. You don’t have to live in a log cabin to use it. The name is more about how the squares are made.

Each of the strips is meant to look like a log. The “logs” are sewn together to make it look like a log cabin being built. It was a great way to use up small scraps that might otherwise have been thrown out.

I only sorted the pieces very roughly by colour, but other than that, it was just a matter of using up scraps.

Partway through making up the squares, it suddenly hit me how MANY “logs” I had to put together to make the quilt the size I wanted, but eventually it came together.

    • It did. I hadn’t realized just how long when I first started it, and was almost overwhelmed when I counted the number of strips I would need. (I had miscounted it at first). Nearly gave it up but I had already put a fair bit of time into it and didn’t want to waste that.

  5. Looking at the quilt, it seems to me that you need as many logs as you used scraps of cloth to build a small cabin.

  8. It is a very beautiful and creative design. I love it! You must have made it during all the rainstorms we had last year! Very impressive job! Hope Emma doesn’t decide to pull it down and cozy up in it. 🙂

    • There was a time when she might have tried that, but she’s all grown up now and knows better. She’s getting her toenails cut today (a doggie manicure). She freaks out when she sees us with the clippers but somehow the vet assistants don’t have any trouble doing it. Maybe they give her treats after each snip….

  10. Anneli, this cozy log cabin quilt is really beautiful. I first thought that this was a pattern that would go very well with the wood and rustic decor of a log home. Your explanation was very interesting for me and I learned something again. Thanks for that!

  12. A four-day quilting retreat sounds like fun. I think your quilt looks really beautiful – we tend not to truly appreciate things we have made and so seeing it hanging up like that in a way made you see it as others would.

    • The thing about the retreats is that you don’t have to think about all the things you “should” or “could” be doing, and all business things can wait for a couple of days. It’s amazing how much sewing you get done. And you’re so right about seeing the quilt as others would when it’s not in its usual surroundings. Thanks for your visit, Anne.

  14. Sleeping under your own creation must give you good dreams! Or at least creative ones. Hmmm, maybe we should put one of our stories or two underneath our pillows too. 🙂
Hope your gorgeous quilt enjoyed the fresh breeze but didn’t get caught in the rain.
