He’s back, but still a bit blurry. This American goldfinch is very shy and doesn’t like to be photographed. Again he took off just as I was focusing my camera and I had to settle for a faraway shot. When he sat on the edge of the hedge it was like trying to take a picture of a mosquito on a moose.
This time I got a better sense of his colouring. One day, maybe he’ll sit still when he’s closer in, like this morning when he sat on the garden fence until I got the camera. He is definitely camera shy.
But with colours like this flashing signals to every hawk around, I don’t think I’d sit still long either.
Cuz I’m pretteeeee, oh, so pretteeeee,
I can’t stick around, for I’m bound to be found,
Cuz I’m pretteeeee, oh, so pretteeeee,
It’s awfully hard to be meeeee.
Yes, they’ll see meeeee, oh, they’ll see meeeee,
I really must fly, if I stay I will die,
Yes, they’ll see meeeee, oh, they’ll see meeeee,
And dying so young is not pretteeeee.

I don’t see them down here, Anneli, but maybe back in Michigan. I’ve been in the desert for ten years, and certain things have been forgotten!

I know from the last post that there are plenty of them in the UK (the European version of them), but I really don’t know where there are a lot of them in North America. Maybe in “The Holler” where Cindy lives?

She also lives in a desert too I think, I see little birds all the time on my birdbath, they could be a house finch or a sparrow, I’m not sure but I love watching them splish splash and have a bath! I saw a Grackle in it yesterday, much larger than the usual birds but that bird was having a great time splashing around!

Who, in the desert, doesn’t love water?

A good point of course! It seems my tiny watering hole is known by a few local birds. Maybe I should put another one back there…

I used to get quite a few (along with several other kinds of finches) when I had feeders in my yard in Medicine Hat. Cheers.

Yes, so pretty. I posted a picture I had of one when we used to have our bird feeder. It was the one and only time I saw that bird (in person). So yes, they are very elusive. Back then, I always kept my camera near the window so I could get pictures at the feeder.

They are beautiful birds, but it’s apparent why they can’t just sit around and relax for a while. Great shot and poem, Anneli.

Just love to watch the little birds fleeting about from feeder to feeder. Strange that I get gold finches in the front garden but not in the back garden
