Again, I was in a rush and didn’t get wonderful, clear photos, but you’re all so good at using your imagination and that’s what I’m counting on today.
The woodpeckers were back. It was Pam and what I thought last week was her sister. I’ve had my eyes opened because I got a better look at the “sister.” Turns out, it is most probably her baby, not her sister.
Pam is near the bottom of the tree here, and Junior is above her. Junior’s topknot is not a brilliant red yet, most likely for her own protection. She won’t be such a target for her enemies.
Pam is working hard, pecking open the bark to look for bugs. Junior is still afraid of giving herself a headache so she lets Mom do all the work.
Pam stops mid-peck and looks around.
“Do you see her, Junior?” she asks.
“See who?” Jr. says.
“Whom.”
“What?”
“See whom, not who? … Oh, never mind. Do you see the crazy lady with the camera? She’s always hanging around near the back door, and I thought I heard it open. I don’t mind her, but that black cocker spaniel is always wherever she is, and that dog LOVES birds – and before you say, ‘Oh that’s good,’ let me tell you, ‘No. That mutt likes birds, but not in a good way.'”
“But don’t worry, Junior, we’re safe. Just open your beak. I’ve got a treat for you to make you forget all about that killer dog.”
“LOL! Gimme a break,” says Emma. “Me? Kill a bird? … Well, not a woodpecker, anyway … not today….”

I love watching the woodpeckers and their youngsters. It amazes me how quickly they can peel off the bark on some of the trees. Great photos, and a nice honourable mention for Emma.

I know I’ve used that picture of Emma before, but I love it because she seems to be laughing. Isn’t it great to see the bird families growing up? There seem to be fewer birds this year, so I’m happy for every survivor.

Your photos clearly tell the story along with your words, Anneli, great job! Hi, Emma. I looked closely at how you typed this post, I learned a couple of things. Thanks, Anneli. 😊

Anything in particular (about how I wrote it)? Glad you liked it, anyway. Emma says, “Hi, John,” back. She knows a dog lover when she sees one.

The paragraph that starts with Whoom. Lots of punctuation I guess. I am making plenty of mistakes on my blog! 🤪

That’s okay. Not all blog posts are about writing. If it’s about the pictures, you don’t have to be perfect about the writing.

I had to listen hard to what they were saying – they were making such a racket. Sorry for the repeat of Emma, but I love this picture where she looks like she’s laughing.

Glad you liked them, Ursula. The pileated woodpeckers are something special for us. We have other woodpeckers here too, but these are my favourites.

How lucky to see two pileated woodpeckers at one time. You caught them in some great poses; nice shots too.

I almost deleted the last bird picture because of the blur, but then I realized she was stuffing bugs into Junior’s bill and the movement cause the blurriness.

She’s a puppy here, but she grew into the bird hunting/killing part. It’s what she’s bred for. The Captain says (I may have told you this before) – She’s a teddy bear in the house and a wolverine in the field.

Great photos, Anneli. We’ve been watching the fledgling jays. It takes such effort to learn to be a bird. Pam’s being a good mama, it seems.

I do love woodpeckers and all their smart uniforms and pointyness. There is a large European species a bit similar to the pileated, unimaginatively called a black woodpecker.

Great post and so many beautiful photos. I find that Woodpeckers are fascinating and fun to watch. I have often noticed these unique birds in and around my garden and encountered a few of them during trips around the country. Their long, sharp bills that they use for drilling on trees, along with their bright feathers make them hard to miss. Thanks for sharing and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx
