Whoever Said Life Was Fair?

Look closely and what do you see hanging out of Emma’s mouth?

She had just been over to a stack of landscaping ties that she had been visiting constantly over the last few weeks, and I saw her lunge at something.

She got what she lunged for, but then stood there not knowing if she should swallow or spit.

Whoever said that life was fair?

Didn’t I catch that mouse?

Good clean catch was fair and square.

Snatched her by her house.

Meanwhile Maisie Mouse was cast into darkness. I couldn’t see what she was doing in there, but I feared the worst.

Oh my goodness! It’s so dark,

Wet and warm with slime,

That black dog is like a shark,

Got me good this time.

But Emma is so obedient. She knows that when I say, “Thank you,” she should give up what’s in her mouth.

After many, pleading “thank yous” Maisie was dropped onto the grass.  I had to then protect her from another onslaught of Emma-attacks. Maisie ran up onto my shoes and then onto the cuff of my sweat pants. Luckily they are elasticized and she had no access to my bare leg (or anywhere else). I took a tissue from my jacket pocket and picked her up – not an easy task with her skittering here and there. But as soon as I got hold of her, the ungrateful girl sank her chompers into my finger.

Did I let go? You’d better believe it. I had to quickly distract Emma while Maisie made her way through the grass to the edge of the trees and disappeared.

Tiny little needle knives

Sank into my skin,

Thanks I got for saving lives,

What a fool I’ve been.

I’m glad Maisie survived, but I’m still waiting for a Thank You note from her. It could be a while. Oh – wait! Here’s Maisie.

Poor Maisie. Then she bit her saviour. Kinda like biting the hand that saves you, I guess. Cute tail/tale Anneli. Allan

Ouch! Are you going for a rabies shot, Annelie? I hope Maisie didn’t bite Emma’s mouth. She is a beautiful dog! 🥰

Emma’s a mouser?! I’d keep an eye on your finger and Emma as well.

Yes, I agree with other commenters that you should keep an eye on Emma and yourself, but I have to say that I would have done the same!

Who needs a cat when he has a dog?
Lovely picture of Emma and a nice little rhyme.
Take good care of that wound!

This has got me wondering if cats get bitten by the mice they catch. My bite was a tiny bit red last night so I put peroxide on it and then a bandaid. (Thought I’d fry off any bacteria). I did it again this morning but it’s much better already. Thanks.

OMG, Anneli you are brave. I’d have been running around like the ground was the hot sun, trying to get that mouse off of me. Add screaming into the mix. Can mice have rabies? And Emma was doing what hunting dogs do, but I’d have been screaming at my dog to drop it like you were with ‘thank you.’ A friend of mine just told me a story about her dog with a baby rabbit in her mouth. Unfortunately, the baby wasn’t so lucky as Maisie.

In our back yard, we had a bunny hole with babies in it. Do you know how I found it? Tre and I were out back when I heard squeaking noises. Tre’s squeaky toys are not allowed outside, so I went looking for him thinking he brought one out without my knowledge. I found him jamming his nose in the bunny hole and the babies were screaming. Thankfully, I got him away before anymore could happen. The babies have grown and fled the nest over this past weekend.

It’s kind of funny how that “thank you” business started. Emma would bring us things and we’d say, “Thank you,” and she dropped them into our hands. So then I did that when I asked her to find my second shoe for me (because she had taken it off somewhere so she knew where it was). I’d be happy when she brought it and say, “Thank you!” So that became the word for “Drop it.” I don’t know if mice carry rabies. We don’t have a lot of it here, but anything is possible. Anyway, I put peroxide on the bite and it doesn’t look too bad. I can identify with the rabbit story. I once found a nest of them under a shrub. We were already overrun with rabbits, so I had to dispatch them. We still have way too many.

Thank goodness Emma was obedient, and thank goodness Maisie was spared. Next time, don’t try to pick up a live mouse. 🙂 Your poetry was wonderful!

Wow, you are a hero! What an adventure! I hope you take care of that finger well. I just read a horrible story about a woman in Australian who died from a tiny dog nip–from a very rare bacteria! This was some story, Anneli.

It looks like you’ve already talked about the bite with others here, but that was my first thought. So hope it heals and doesn’t get worse. The photo of Emma is just too cute and your words are perfect. 🙂

Maisie is a lucky mouse and a bit mixed up about who to thank. I’m glad to know you’re okay and taking care, Anneli, and I enjoyed the whimsy of the poem.

Dear Emma, no more kisses and belly rubs from Auntie. I saw that wee tail you sly little girl. Your mom must be very aware of The possibility of infection . I know she will watch you like a helicopter mom . Maisie lives to tell her grandkids and great grands and so on.🐶❤️🐶

I’ve some concerns here with rabies . . . but I have read several articles that mice are rarely known to carry rabies. I have two cats that hunt mice, so it was a concern of mine, too. On the other hand, I’m sure that Maisie will, in time, and after the shock wears off, come to appreciate what you did. 🙂

She doesn’t know how lucky she was. Or maybe she does. Who knows? I’m happy to hear that mice don’t often get rabies. We have the very rare case of rabies here on Vancouver Island, usually in bats. One poor fellow was bitten when he handled a bat. Didn’t even realize he’d been bitten, and then died of rabies. But these cases are quite rare here. Still it doesn’t hurt to be careful. My Maisie bite is all healed over and not red anymore, but I’m rethinking my tendencies to rescue every little unfortunate creature. At least I’ll find another strategy and not pick them up with my bare hands.

That little Maisie was sure ungrateful. Loved Emma’s photo and the poem to go with it all. Also, glad to know that your finger is all healed. ❤

Oh that is so ironic, Carol. Today, over three weeks later, after the finger was all healed up, it flared up right where the teeth marks were and I had to go get antibiotics. I had been using a nutcracker on several hundred hazelnuts from our trees, and that bite spot got irritated and swelled up really badly. I think the antibiotics will do the trick but when a tiny red line started from the bite swelling, I had to go deal with it. I have an update on the mouse adventure coming up in a day or so.
