Beggars and Choosers

I see something wiggling around in there. I need my breakfast so…. I guess I’ll peck away at it.

Here I go. It’s sure hard work to get a bite to eat. I wonder what I’ll find.

ACK! Beetle grubs and ants? You expect me to eat THAT?

Oh, well.  I’m hungry and beggars can’t be choosers.

The woodpeckers and flickers seem to trying to stock up on food right now. I have had Downy woodpeckers and Northern Flickers in my Schubert, slurping on the fermented berries. Hmmm, maybe they are looking to get a buzz on. Hope your day is going well Anneli. Allan

Thanks for the video. I love watching them and they’re so pretty. I could hear lots of birds in the background; always a pleasure to hear.

Oh Anneli, what a treat to watch this pileated woodpecker. Such a grand woodpecker. The video nicely captures its powerful pecking.

    So wonderful, Anneli!
Yes, woodpeckers usually pick insects out of the bark, but I’ve noticed that when they can simply help themselves to food in the garden, they like to change their diet from time to time. They also liked to peck at suet balls in our garden.
Anneli, I wish you all the best!

Great title! Sometimes nature’s pantry seems a bit empty, but a motherlode of goodies waits to be discovered.

To have woodpeckers you must have trees, no peckerwoods near here.

Always like a glimpse of a woodpecker, even a fussy and hungry one!
