It helicoptered from the tree,
This golden flaky leaf,
It’s happening, and I can see,
The maple is in grief.

The summer days are sadly gone,
Those romping times were fun,
But autumn’s here, we must move on
From lazing in the sun.
Without the maple’s leafy dress,
Her long arms will be bare,
No hiding places for the squirrels
Who used to scamper there.
It’s sad to see the warm days go,
And we’ll be soused with rain,
The leaves will swirl, the wind will blow,
As autumn comes again.

But as the summer weather sours,
Rambunctious days retire,
I’ll find a way to pass the hours,
Chew slippers by the fire.

Thanks so much, Ursula. She was surprised at the leaf because it had just come down and fluttered down by her feet.

Thanks, Jacqui. She’s so easygoing and the best part of it is, she speaks English. She can pick a word out of the middle of a sentence, especially if the word is “out” or “fed.”

Yeah, we aren’t used to that kind of weather anymore! Emma isn’t fussy about getting wet unless it’s in a swampy place with ducks in it.

The end of summer is always sad but, as dear Emma knows, there are good days ahead like lying in front of a fireplace chewing on a slipper. Sweet poem and lovely photos of Emma. I particularly favor the middle one where Emma seems to be intense on planning the coming autumn days. ❤

Great poem and photos Anneli. Somehow, I think dogs may be less bothered by the seasonal changes than humans. The autumn days have been ongoing here for a while, but still no killing frost, which is highly unusual. I’d best go out and buy my snow shovel. Have a great evening. Allan

For sure it will come. I predict you’ll get your first snow on October 5th and it will melt again. Then on November 5th you’ll get snow that stays. I wonder if I’ll be right.

Typically lasting snow and cold comes on or near Hallowe’en, or generally somewhere between my son’s and my birthdays in early November. Last year it was Nov 2 before any snow fell. We rode our bikes 36 km out in the country on a warm October 30. But, who knows, it is an El Nino cycle and all bets are off. 😊

I was given a black Cocker puppy when I still was pre-school age, but it terrified me, and that was the end of that. Now I know what that pup might have looked like when it grew up!

Most likely it was an American cocker. Emma is an English cocker. They are a bit lankier and are mainly used in upland game bird hunting here. Possibly also rabbits back in England, but I’m not sure about that. I think cockers can be intimidating for very young children. They can get jealous of other little beings, and I’m always careful with Emma when little children are around, although she has always been gentle.

We’ve had a lot of very hot days without rain. I’m longing for warm days with a bit of rain now and then, but we seem to be getting all or nothing, going from one extreme to another. But right now, I don’t mind some cooler days. As you come into spring, we’re sliding into the coolness of autumn.

This poem is a great example of Anthropomorphism hahaha. The leaf is in grief? Or is it the rhyme? Or is the poet in grief over the changing of the seasons?

No, the maple is in grief. I meant the maple tree; not the maple leaf. Just like “Margaret, are you grieving over goldengrove unleaving,” except I’ve changed it to the tree grieving at losing its leaves.

Oh, I love that poem! But it’s still anthropomorphism! And personification! haha OR if you believe that trees are capable of emotion then it’s not. And maybe that is true!

Yes, it is anthropomorphism, but I draw the line at trees feeling emotion … I think…. 🤔

Some of them are so big and enduring that I feel a lot of power coming from them – and they are living things. I suppose they don’t need to speak English to be worthy of our esteem. Think of how they react to stimuli. An inanimate thing can’t do that. On a basic level, they do react to many of the same things we do (heat, cold, wind, light, and dark).

Yes!!! I read something horrific today. So why I need to share bad news I don’t know. A beloved 300 year old sycamore near Hadrian’s wall in England was cut down by a 16 year old boy! I think that’s close to murder.
