Red-breasted Sapsucker

Air is cold, I’m shivering,

Legs so skinny, quivering,

Ants or beetles, if you’re near,

Eating you would bring me cheer.

Not much sap is dripping down,

Though I’ve drilled holes all around,

Maybe though,  an ant will scurry,

Running off in such a hurry.

I’ve no chocolate to coat it,

Nature simply won’t promote it,

But the crunchy flavour’s good,

With a hint of fir tree wood.

Watch me skipping round the tree,

Eating ants and bugs with glee,

Little holes, the bark endures,

Graciously, my meal ensures.

I apologize for the background noise of dogs barking and garbage trucks backing up somewhere in the world outside my own little world.

No need to ever apologize for dogs barking. I could watch that longer–the bird.

Thanks for posting the video of this little guy. It looks like he was finding some food, at least. I’m always amazed at how hardy the smaller birds can be in cold weather. Great poem.

These guys are so pretty and diligent in their work. We saw one in Stanley Park in May. It took me a while to figure out what he was. Thanks for sharing Anneli. Allan

What a pretty little thing. There’s a red-headed woodpecker in the neighborhood who searches for food in the same way. It always amazes me that they can find tidbits in winter (and it is winter here — well, well below freezing. We are not amused.)

Haha. “We are not amused” up here either. I misnamed this woodpecker a few years ago when I did a post about it. I called it a red-headed woodpecker (and I know there is such a thing), but this one is not it. Definitely a sapsucker. You probably do have the red-headed woodpecker where you are.

Maybe the rapid beating of birdie hearts keeps them warm. I can’t imagine foraging outside in this cold for food. A lovely poem. I hope the sapsucker gets his fill of yummy bugs. 🙂
