Harriet is rooting around for the last of the hidden hazelnuts from last year’s stash. It’s getting harder to find the remaining ones and her fur is a mess every time she surfaces after “diving” under the old tree stump.
If you make the videos full screen you’ll see better as Harriet is quite small.
But as you will see from the video below, she did finally have some success. (Apologies for the last couple of blurry seconds when I tried to zoom in. I should know by now that it often doesn’t work for me.) The hazelnut she finds still has the shell on it, but she makes short work of that.
Watching Harriet, Junior (who will soon be named) tries his best to follow suit, but so far he hasn’t figured out where the nuts are buried. After all, he wasn’t even born yet when Harriet hid them.
Playing in the dirt is fun,
But those nuts are on the run.
Maybe they have rolled away,
So they live another day.

Are you going to turn these animal adventures into children’s books? I think they would make fun books Anneli!

I would love to do that, Brad, but I’m clueless about how to go about getting the photos and stories organized. I would need a very rich sponsor to do that, and I don’t think that’s going to happen any time soon. But thank you for the vote of confidence. Have a great weekend.

I often see them from my kitchen window and I run out with the camera – often too late – so you can see why I get very little work done!

She sure is, and I think she’s tired of feeding her babies. Time for them to get their own food. Hard work.

Oh I really liked these videos, Anneli! Squirrels always have a guilty look about them – like they’re about to be caught. I recently changed our bird feed to include peanuts and now we’re seeing a lot more squirrel action!

If you put any other kind of nuts, it will be healthier for them. They like nuts, but I read somewhere that peanuts are not particularly good for squirrels. But the “guilty” look, I think, is from them always being wary of danger. They really are fun to watch. I’m glad you have squirrels to watch too.

Thanks, Belinda. I know they like to clean off our hazelnut trees in the fall. I’m just amazed at how they find them again after so long.

These furry critters hide their nuts at so many places. I often wonder how they remember them all when it is time to retrieve them. Oh well, if they forget, we’ll have a new hazelnut tree growing. Great video shot. Blurriness is not always bad, Anneli, as it indicates speed.

We are so lucky to have them living all around us. Having lots of trees and shrubs for food and shelter brings them closer.

Squirrels are so skittery, the best way to capture them is often video. Fascinating to watch. I must get my camera closer to me. We have a blue jay who grabs peanuts in shell from a neighbour’s yard and then sits in the tree by my window, pounding the shells on the tree branch to get at the goodies. Happy Wendesday Anneli.
