This spotted towhee has been living here for quite a while.
His wife is somewhere nearby but she’s more camera shy.
She looks much like her flashy husband, but her colours are slightly muted.
They have been nesting on the ground inside my fenced garden, usually under the thick rosemary bush. But this year I cut the rosemary back quite a bit, not thinking I was making the usual nesting area less inviting.
So the towhees chose the messiest corner of the garden where I had not weeded, and put a nest in the mess. I let the poppies grow up in the raised bed, thinking it would hide the weeds until I could get to them. Little did I know I was also helping hide a towhee nest.
I sneaked in there with my camera and got a picture of one towhee baby still in the nest. Mother had flown out when I came close but she went right back after I left. Now I’m hoping the baby will make it through the next critical days and weeks.
There’s no question of catching up with my weeding in this part of the jungle now.

Wow, I’m glad you found the nest before weeding, Anneli. I had mourning doves, finches, and hummingbirds having babies in the garden of our SoCal home. In Portland, Oregon, one dark-eyed junco just gave up her eggs. I hope my garden will be friendly for the birds to make babies.

It’s so important to preserve some habitat for the birds. Lots of shrubs and edge effect.

It is, Anneli! I still have a lot to do with my new garden. Eventually, I would like to have my garden to be a certified habitat.

That’s such a lovely find, Anneli. Have your plant pot eggs hatched yet? There’s a nearby finch nest and although I have seen the parents busily flying back and forth I haven’t spotted the nest.

Not yet. I’ve watered it carefully every second day and so far, so good, but as it gets time for the birds to hatch out, I’ll have to let the plant suffer for a while.

Interesting that the towhees are ground nesters. Hope all goes well. The weeds will just have to wait and I am sure they will Happy Sunday Anneli. Allan

I love a bird lover. And these towhees knew they’d be safe in your poppies. What a gorgeous picture of the poppies and the towhees and the nest. Now, I think you should include a photo of YOU photographing the wildlife in your yard. I imagine you stalking and squinting and squatting to get just the right shot. WELL done.

I hate to disturb them but I’m selfish enough to scare the mother off for a short time to snag a photo. As for a photo of me, well, we don’t want to scare the people away, do we? It’s bad enough to scare the birds.

Ha. My daughter has a nest in the wreath on her front door. One of her kids opened the front door and the mama bird flew into the house. The two babies were still in the nest. We left all the doors open and FINALLY the mama bird got out. It’s stressful being bird lovers!!

Amazing, about them nesting where you hadn’t yet weeded. I agree–that area will have to be ceded to them for the future.

Yes, either that, or I have to fix up the rosemary to be more appealing again.

No need to worry about the weedy mess amongst the poppies. Lovely spot for a bird’s nest especially in the fenced in garden area. I need to weed around the border gardens, but I am simply going to say it is a natural “woodland garden with greenery and wildflowers”. I enjoy watching the towhees and their crazy personalities! — Sonja

Awww … these kind of visitors are greatly welcome and how wonderful to get a photo of the little one! They have such a beautiful surrounding to their nest. My only concern would be cats etc coming across the nest. Enjoy watching this family grow before taking flight, Anneli!

Luckily the nest was inside the fenced garden area and because we have a dog and an acre of property, no cats come here. My bigger worry was that a crow would pick it off. It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve seen a crow fly off with a baby bird. As you can guess, crows are not my favourite thing. But, the nest is empty and I’m hopeful that the little guy made it. Fingers crossed.
