If you love fishing and camping in solitary places, you might want to scout out your surroundings, before you go too far afield.
This mama grizzly and her two cubs (probably last year’s) like fishing and hanging out in solitary places too.
The fact that she still has both cubs could possibly mean that the fishing has been good and that mother and cubs are healthy and doing fine. However, people and grizzlies in close proximity to each other are usually not a good combination. I hope, for the grizzlies’ sake, that there is no interaction that will cause them to be trapped and “dispatched.”
These bears are on Vancouver Island where grizzlies are making an appearance in the last few years. They swim over from the mainland, island hopping to shorten the distance they need to swim. It’s possible that in this case the mother is trying to keep her cubs safe from male grizzlies who would be a threat to them. In some species, the male would kill the young to gain access to the mother and “have some fun with her.” The big cats are another example of this.
This photo was taken by a friend of the Captain near a favourite fishing spot. Sometimes, discretion is the better part of valor, hence the blurry quality of the photo. If the photographer had gone closer, the picture might have been clearer, but he might not have been around long enough to send it.
I think the friend probably decided to take a raincheck on fishing that day.

I agree on leaving the grizzlies alone to keep them fed and healthy, Anneli.

Best to see the grizzlies (especially mom and cubs) from a distance or from inside a car. Glad the Captain stayed safe. Happy Friday Anneli. Allan

Yikes! Yes, a grainy picture is definitely the better part of valour! I agree that the grizzlies need to be left alone to eat and develop as they should. Last summer we had quite a few black bears coming into town to escape the fires and find some food, but none of them were trapped or seemed to cause problems. People were staying inside because of the smoke and as soon as the smoke cleared the bears left, too.

Black bears in the interior are much more predatory than the ones on the coast, so it’s just as well that people stayed inside because of the smoke. I sure feel sorry for the animals that have to escape from the fires.

There’s a lot to love about a Mama Grizzly, but a lot to beware of. Thanks for the true-to-life photos.

Thanks, Jacqui. I almost didn’t post it because it’s so blurry, but it tells that the cameraman zoomed the camera in a hurry before he zoomed away himself.

A solid decision to stay away from mom! The Captain and his friend are wise, Anneli. 😎👍🏻

There are times when a blurry photo is far better than no photo. Most of us don’t get the chance to see such sights, so these occasional glimpses are especially interesting. Of course, down here in the southern bayous and marshes, discretion over valor is the best choice when one of our alligators appears!

I’m not sure which is scarier – grizzly or alligator!

The problem with fishing is, that the bears like going fishing as well. I would wait till they are done with their fishing. Bears first!

In an ideal world, that would be great, but by the time the bears finish with the fishing, the fish are finished going up the rivers.

Great photo of the bears, considering the circumstances! I hope they continue to stay safe and away from those nasty humans. Ha ha ha. Glad the photographer decided to back off and fish another day. — Sonja

I think if it had been me, the photo would have been one big blur, with my heels showing in the bottom of the picture as I’m running away. — Oh, wait. You’re not supposed to run. Guess I’d have to just get eaten.

I have great respect for bears, and I have no desire to meet a grizzly in person. The thought of their demise because of human selfishness is maddening. Leave them alone to live their lives. We’ve never camped near grizzlies and probably won’t by now. Black bears usually keep to themselves, but I would never assume anything. Thanks for sharing the photo.

I wouldn’t trust any kind of bear. The ones in the interior of the country tend to be more predatory because they have to stalk their prey, while the coastal ones mainly stand in the rivers and fish. There have been plenty of cases of fatal black bear attacks by these interior bears, but grizzlies? I wouldn’t trust a grizzly anywhere, any time. I agree with you though about human interference causing them to be put down. So unfortunate and irresponsible.

I wouldn’t trust any bear either. I don’t care what people say. It would be my luck that ‘this one time’ a bear chose to act unusually, making me a statistic! Yikes! We watch for them, but haven’t seen one, and I’m fine with it. 🙂
