I’m pretty sure this is a bobcat (not a lynx – which looks very similar). If you see one of these fellows in your neighbourhood, make sure you keep your little dog or cat in the house while the big guy is prowling around.
This guy was NOT in my yard, and I’m thankful for that.
If you have Bob visiting your neighbourhood, be sure not to leave pet food outside, or have a lot of birdseed lying around your bird feeding station. You may find them interested in your fruit trees when the fruit is ripe. A healthy bobcat probably won’t attack you. It is more interested in your favourite squirrels that live in your woodshed.
If you’re out for a walk in the woods and you see a bobcat, it’s probably a good idea to pick up any small children you may have with you. We can never know how desperate a bobcat may be.
Robert and Roberta Cat
Say they’re bobcats and that’s that.
Bob and Bobbi hunt for squirrels,
Even one that jumps and twirls.
Chase them up and down the tree,
Sneaking up when they don’t see.
Evening time they have a rest,
That’s the time they like the best.
Snug inside their little den,
Under tree roots now and then,
Sometimes underneath a cliff,
Perched beneath a ledge to sniff.

A fun poem, Anneli! And, scary to have that wild cat in your backyard. 🫣

It would be, but I’m sorry if I misled you, John. This was not in my yard. But they are frequent backyard visitors in other places.

We have one that walks along the fence in our backyard. An athletic critter!

I see these very occasionally in the refuges and wildlife management areas. Once, I was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a female with kits — but she scurried her youngsters back into the brush quick as the bunny they might have been hunting. There’s a ranch manager in south Texas that has had one give birth under the porch of a building three years in a row! Clearly, they know where they can be safe and appreciated.

I would love to see one, but they are not in our area, that I know of.

They are handsome animals. Are they common in your area?

Yes, to the first comment and no to the second, Belinda. They are in southern Canada but not on Vancouver Island (that I know of).

Your poem is fun to read. And the bobcat is very pretty. As long as they stay away from the garden, we even might like them.

Thanks, Ursula. I’m glad you liked it. I always have fun making up little ditties about the critters. And yes, I wouldn’t like to have bobcats around the house.

Fun poem but not fun to see these guys close to your yard. They seem to be fairly comfortable around humans now. Happy Thursday Anneli. Allan

Luckily we don’t have them here, but they are all across southern Canada and in the US, of course.

What a fun poem, Anneli, but I wouldn’t want to see that cat in my yard. 🙂

Beautiful “cat” Bob is such a character! Cats have such a way of making every moment their own, and Bob seems to be a master at that 😀

Funny i just posted a picture of a bigger cat today. I saw one of Bob’s relatives in my year and scared the ya know what out of me. Luckily my sloth cats are indoor cats cuz Bizzaro kitty looked hungry.
