My sister-in-law’s dog, a Coton de Tulear, would like to introduce herself to you.
Hi! My mom calls me Eleanor Rigby when she wants me to pay attention to her, but usually I’m just plain – well, not so plain, really – Ellie.
It’s been a trying day today,
No postman going by,
No other dogs came by to play,
And I will tell you why.
Today has been a holiday,
The businesses closed,
Most folks won’t go to work today,
And so for you I’ve posed.
I’m lying here on my day off,
Don’t need to do my job,
Of barking at each passing toff,
Or anyone who’d rob.
I take it easy on my couch,
That has my doggie throw,
My mistress surely is no slouch,
“A pillow? There you go!”

Yup! That’s my Ellie. Poor little rich girl.. so she believes!

Being pretty much out of the mainstream, I’d forgotten that yesterday was yet another federal holiday — until I went to the bank. Clearly, Ellie was smarter or more aware than me, and made good use of her time despite it all!

I also, only just realized before I wrote this that it was an American holiday too. For us it was Thanksgiving.

Love the poem and dog, Anneli. Reminds me how we name our animals one thing and then call them by another. My mother raised and showed Dobermans, and she named one of my favorites Albrecht Von Tannenwald. A fine show dog and champion, my brother and I called him Al, but the dog’s claim to fame was ‘smiling on command,’ which we used to scare the neighborhood kids, making them think he was about to turn them into a tasty snack.

I love it. Such a comedown from “Albrecht von Tannenwald” to be called Al, but I bet “Al” appealed to his inner personality and made him a nicer dog. As for the smiling (grinning) I saw a friend’s English pointer do that. He would come towards me grinning, and have me quite nervous about his intentions. All I saw was teeth.

Ah, those teeth! I forgot to mention Al served as the engine for my Schwinn Stingray. With the long leash tied to the handlebars, Al heeded my command and progressed from a walk to a run, pulling me at an impressive gallop for several blocks. He and I loved it!

As long as he didn’t pull you in the wrong direction, that sounds great.

That’s a story for another time, and it wasn’t Al, but Mike, my Boston terrier. (That adventure almost resulted in spontaneous human combustion.)

Such a little cutie and the perfect poem to capture it all. I love how dogs are able to be so relaxed. Maybe, people need to follow their lead. Happy Tuesday Anneli. Allan

When an animal relaxes on its back, exposing its most vulnerable parts to danger, you know it isn’t worried about a thing.

I like your poetry. Your lines have great rhythm. Poetry in German is Dichtung meaning compressed ideas with emphasis on conveying condensed meaning. Oh how nice it would be, Anneli, if we all could relax like Ellie!

Thanks, Peter. I’m glad you like my little poems. They’re not meant to be too serious but just a bit of fun. I’m a long way from being a Dichter.
Yes, it would be nice if we could relax like Ellie. I think we could start with small time-outs and maybe we’d learn to do it too.
