Before the big windstorm happened, the Captain was keeping a few cans of beer cool, in a plastic tote on top of the patio table that you can just see the corner of at the right side of the photo.
The second patio table, the round one on the left, used to sit in the middle of the deck where the fallen hanging basket is lying on its side now. The wind must have blown the table over as far as it could go.
The oranges were on the table beside the beer cans, to keep cool. I also had a small parsley plant in a pot. You might see it lying on its side without the pot near the far end of the deck. Just a matted clump of dirt with a few yellow green leaves in it.
The blue pieces are part of a small clay pot that I painted about ten years ago. I always liked that little pot, but never imagined that the wind could send it flying off the table and smash it. The white saucer used to be under the parsley pot. Not sure where that pot ended up. I think it was plastic so it may have flown to the neighbours’ place or be in the next town by now.
The bits of branches from the fir trees are relatively small compared to the branch that came down just beyond the deck, as you will see in the next photo.
I’m glad no people, dogs, or squirrels were out for a walk when this branch decided to drop in, and I was so happy to see the squirrels and two hummingbirds alive in the morning.
And so, further to the previous post about Thanksgiving Day, and all we have to be thankful for, I feel very thankful to have been spared major trouble from this windstorm. Even the few hours of a loss of power were not too bad. I can’t begin to imagine the terror people go through in hurricanes. Hearing this wind roar through like a freight train was bad enough.

It’s wild what the wind can do! It’s so, so powerful. I’m glad that all the little animals and birds found places to stay safe.

Strong winds or storms scare me and so does flooding. During the last years we had all of it.
It´s amazing how the little birds can hang on to something with their tiny little claws.

I wonder about that too – how do they survive this heavy wind? I suppose a lot of them don’t, but we don’t always see the ones who don’t make it. But I’m glad that a lot of them do manage to survive it.

We have a tongue-in-cheek wind scale for hurricanes and storms: they’re named for the number of trampolines that go flying and get impaled on the side of garages or stuck in trees. Despite your losses, I’m glad your table wasn’t picked up and sent flying!

I’ve seen newsclips of some of those storms and realize that many of the injuries that happen during storms are the result of flying objects. Being impaled by a slat from a picket fence comes to mind. And yes trampolines would fly nicely with their sails built in. I’m sure your storms are much worse than ours and much more frightening.

I am glad that you didn’t get any major damage, Anneli, these atmospheric rivers are dangerous! 🙏🏻

So far, it’s been just a lot of branches and a few broken pots. I hope it won’t get worse. We have another system building, but this time I will get out there and be more diligent about “battening down the hatches.”

That’s good, I have seen other blogs in that are and in the States that had big trees blown over, very sad. Be on guard. 🙏🏻

Glad all is well our way from this crazy weather Anneli. Port Renfrew and Tofino were not so lucky. Hope this next one goes easier on the Island. Happy Friday. Allan

I suppose we all suffer some form of winter hardship as the systems come through. You are probably in for cold temperatures and snow, while we get the wind and rain. I’m not sure which is worse.

We have been in Vancouver since October 20, so not much snow yet, except on the peaks around us. Lots of rain, though. Cheers

Not for a couple of more weeks. My poor neighbours are shoveling for me. I’m gonna owe them bigtime.

Anneli, I am so glad that you suffered no major damage in the recent windstorm on the Island. Apparently all your furry friends survived, perhaps the squirrels were seeking protection in the woodstack.

Oh boy. Glad you were safe through that “cyclone bomb.” Such strange weather. Sounds like it happened overnight. I do know that powerful sound of wind pounding the house. Scary.
We have that same table on our patio, only in white trim. When we had a windstorm here in Chicagoland once, it blew over and the tempered glass actually shattered into a million pieces. We found another exactly the same.
Stay safe and warm.

I’ve had one of those glass plates shatter from the sun expanding it. I was sitting beside it and nearly jumped out of my skin when it “blew up.” Now I always make sure I have at least some part of it covered with place mats or a picnic tablecloth. The expansion from the heat was too much against the metal rim.
But today we are in for more wind and I’ll be more careful to put things out of the way so they don’t fly around … as much.

Whoa! That glass “blow up” would’ve scared the begeezees out of me. Good thing you didn’t get hit by it. For an outdoor table, they sure didn’t design that properly.
Stay safe from the incoming wind. 💨

It was pretty scary for a few seconds, but it shattered in a “safety glass” kind of way, not sharp shards of glass. Still, I made sure to keep the new one out of the direct heat of the sun after that.

Glad your damage was confined to these things. Many people had branches and even trees land on their homes or garages. We survived fairly well in our area, but our wind was not quite as bad as up island. That wind was quite terrifying and made me very nervous. We did not lose power here but so many areas did. Very scary weather system.

Sorry you have had the ‘freight train’ winds blowing on you dear friend. Heard there were 174 km north Island wind velocity recorded. Happy for all the ski hills opening early and the skiers. 🤗

No, that was wrong. It was probably 74 km gusts. That’s what our weather forecast said, and then it was downgraded for today but we did get some really fierce winds like we hadn’t seen in many, many years. Hope you’re enjoying the warmer weather, Marsha. Take care.
