Ice on the fennel plants looks pretty, but the songbirds that pick at the fennel seeds are dismayed when they see this. Their food source that would otherwise bring some heat to their little bodies is covered in ice.
The deer, too, can suffer when this happens out in the woods. The small twigs on the shrubs of deciduous trees get a coating of ice, and it is very hard on the deer who rely on the twigs to browse on in the winter. Imagine thinking you’ll get a meal of twigs and you get a mouthful of ice instead.
Only sunshine or a warm current of air and maybe some rain can bring the seeds back to an edible condition.
Here is another version of ice in nature – a frozen creek surface.
While it is a pretty design, it reminds me of how easily animals can get into trouble walking on thin ice. If you have a dog who likes to be by the water, be especially careful not to let him/her go onto the thin ice of ponds or creeks that look safe but can be deadly.
Please keep an eye on your pets near thin ice.
I is for ice – sometimes pretty, but not always nice.

I love all the patterns that ice makes, completely forgetting that animals may not!

Agreed; it’s very pretty but not a good thing for the animals and birds. No ice or snow here so far but still lots of rain. Cheers.

The other danger ice and snow bring to animals is road ice and the salts used to melt them. Salt attracts animals to roads where they can be struck by traffic. Have a good Monday Anneli. Allan

Yes, it’s similar to the cattle that lie on the sides of the highway at night to soak up the warmth from the pavement.

Ice also brings down power lines and leads to closed roads and bridges. Here on the coast we get it so rarely we don’t have the road equipment or — in the case of many drivers and pedestrians — the experience to deal with it. Living without power for days during the Valentine’s Day ice storm of 2021 was a horror, but a friend who runs a store dedicated to birds said it was one of his best times ever. People made a point of getting seed and peanuts out for the critters — the flocks at my feeders were the largest I’d ever seen, and the inclusion of dried mealworms even brought in some robins.

You’re so right, Linda. Water is heavy, fresh or frozen. So good to hear that people stepped up to feed the birds. Also good to know they didn’t forget that some are not seed eaters.

Dear Anneli
We like your ice pictures very much. Ice and snow make nature look magical but, of course, it is a problem for the birds and other animals. They need feeding from us then.
We lived in areas where we had frequent ice storms that changed our world into a fairy tale land. Everybody went out then and we loved to drive through an enchanted landscape.
Wishing you a great week

Thanks for your kind words, KB. I agree with you – the frost makes things look pretty, but it’s hard for the animals for a short time.

I hope some rays of sun pop through and melt the ice. Poor little critters.

The ice is beautiful! It’s sad that the deer lose a food source. I remember walking on ice that looks like that as a kid, it made a fun crunching sound.

This kind of frost doesn’t always happen, but once in a while, when it does, the deer suffer.

Probably it’s called rime ice when it covers the twigs on small trees and shrubs. Just guessing.

Good post. I thought the deer would just eat the iced over twig tips and be fine. I guess not! Well, I wouldn’t be fine.

They may end up nibbling on them but it takes away the heat they are hoping to generate.

I’ve read that about people stuck in snow–don’t eat the snow as water. For the reason you mentioned.

Those pictures are beautiful. The plants look as they came out of a fairy tale. I´ve never seen those plants growing, I just know how the seeds look. I think the birds and deer are picking/licking at the seeds anyway.

If they are desperate they may try to eat them anyway, but it makes life harder for them.
