When I first took this guy’s picture, I thought he had hurt his wing. It looked like he had maybe torn the top of his wing where it folds against his body. But when I looked up other photos of great blue herons, I saw that this is a natural colour on their wings. I was relieved to see it and wished I could have all that time back when I worried over his non-existent “owie.”
Mr. Patience, yes, that’s me,
Quietly I stand,
Waiting ’til the frog I see,
Makes a dash for land.

Great blue herons are remarkably patient stealth hunters and a joy to watch. Happy Monday Anneli. Allan

Every winter we have a bird which is going up and down the creek. He looks like your Great blue heron. He is very shy contrary to the mallards which are also coming for a visit now and then.
Nice picture and a very nice little poem.

I wonder if you could get a picture of this heron, maybe with your phone. I’d love to see what it looks like. Thanks for your nice comment, Ursula.

Fine shot. They often out wait me when they fish, they are so patient.

I see what confused you. Me, too. Funnily, I just finished a book by Kathleen O’Neal Gear that starred a Blue Heron. I feel like I’m getting to know them.

I had to laugh at the close, Anneli. The squeak got me!

I thought afterwards that maybe it should have been a croak, but if he was stressed enough (and I’m sure he was) it might have been a squeak after all.

They are such amazing birds who will stand completely still for a very long time and they’re so incredibly fast, too. I love watching them. Your photo is fantastic.

You must have been patient waiting for that lunch to happen. Wouldn’t want to be a fish with that heron around.

That color patch often is hidden by the bird’s other feathers, but it can be quite striking, too. During breeding season, it can become quite a bit brighter. Great blue herons are so common here they sometimes get ignored, like sparrows; they often fish from docks in the marinas. On the other hand, I took my favorite photo of this bird out at the Brazoria refuge; I may never see a sight like this again.

Thanks for that info, Linda. I didn’t even realize until recently that they had this colour patch.

Thanks, Diana. I hate to see animals hurt and was happy to learn it was just his natural colours and my natural ignorance.
