He stayed there for several minutes, giving me time to focus on him. I didn’t realize until later that he wasn’t wanting to leave the flicker he’d just killed.
On that day, a lot of the little birds were dive bombing this merlin to try to make him go away. I didn’t find out until a few minutes after I took this picture that he had just killed a young flicker that was lying on the ground nearby.

That’s such a great photo, Anneli! Yes, his presence will do some scattering, for sure.

Just like Merlin the Magician, he can make other birds disappear.

It´s a very pretty bird but he looks very scary to all the birds which are smaller than him. The poem is fitting the Merlin.

We have resident Merlin Falcons return to our city every year. We cheer their arrival and they tend to quiet the crows. Happy Friday Anneli. Allan

I approve of anything that “deals” with crows.

Nice shot of the Merlin – looks as though it might have recently snacked on some unlucky creature. Cute poem as well!

Yes, it had. I only saw it later, but it had killed a juvenile flicker. The other songbirds were divebombing the merlin bravely.
