A Stupid-People Fire

Looking out from my house a couple of days ago, I saw what turned out to be a 4.5 hectare wildfire near Comox Lake, which is up in that forested area (the water in the lower part of the photo is salt water).

Luckily, the firefighters who respond to wildfires were quick to get up there, and after a while they got the fire at least to stop spreading. If not for them, it could have been very bad.

Man made, they think. These fires so often are. If it isn’t arson, then it’s carelessness and stupidity.

Campfires made where they should not be made at this time of year, and not put out properly.

A carelessly tossed cigarette.

Broken glass left lying around where the sun (scorching hot these days) can magnify and start a grass fire.

I don’t know what the cause was this time, but there’s a 99% chance it was preventable.

I worry about the poor little birds and animals who have to flee for their lives, if they can. So many of the tinier ones have no hope of going far enough away to escape the flames.

Wow. So glad they got that under control right away. It’s always so disastrous when those things get started. Unfortunately, too many are started on purpose, and then there are those careless stupid people. 😕

I am glad too that they were able to stop the fire from spreading. Fires are scary. When I hear of or see fires in places where the wildlife live I worry about them too. There is way too much loss from fires that should have never been started.

I hope it doesn’t grow any bigger. Too many of these wildfires — and this was certainly true when I lived in L.A. — are altogether preventable if not for carelessness or lawlessness.

I hope so too, Sean. They are keeping an eye on it and I think they’ll be able to keep it under control now, but it could have been much worse. It’s steep country there and hard to fight a fire. It’s bad enough when a fire is caused by a lightning strike, but unforgivable if it’s human caused.

Fires are very concerning. I’m glad they were able to contain it.

I’m class to hear that it was quickly brought under control. Agreed. Carelessness is often the culprit. Many times people do know better, it’s just that they don’t care enough.

Wow, I’m so glad the fire was stopped from spreading, Anneli! I’m with you, it was likely carelessness or something human made. So sad. God bless your firefighters! 🙏🏻❤️🇨🇦

We had one a few weeks ago just over the hill, in Laguna Beach (I’m in Laguna Hills). And there are always fires to my east in the canyons. We’re not in a fire zone which keeps my Homeowner insurance a touch lower.

There’s no limit to the stupidity or destructiveness of some people. I’m glad the fire was contained quickly. I worry about the forests and wildlife as well.

It’s just sad that there are so many wildfires are caused by people for different reasons. There have been so many fires in California as Jacqui mentioned. One fire in LA was two miles from my sister’s home. Thankfully, they were not harmed.

I can´t believe how careless a lot of people are when they go through a forest!

    Dear Anneli
Fortunately, we don’t have these fires. Actually, it’s the other way round. Parts of the heath by the sea are burned to get rid of the gorse.

Thank you, Anneli, for pointing out that broken glass can start a grass fire. I didn’t know that and probably a lot of people aren’t aware of that. Let’s think of the innocent animals caught in a careless or ignorant gesture.

Human carelessness has caused more fires than we know. We all need to take better care of our home. Hope all is well Anneli. Allan

We had fires in the foothills every summer for several years in a row, and every time I saw a plume of smoke, my heart sank. And it’s true… it’s usually our own fault. I’m very glad your fire was controlled so quickly.

A couple of years ago in France at the height of the canicule (heatwave) and after a very dry spell, I saw a man barbecuing under a tree! (Incidentally, barbecues had been forbidden at the time.)

    Some people are so stupid.

I hope you don’t have many more.

Always sad to see another wildfire. I recently finished a trip to Montana, and I saw reminders for people pulling a trailer to keep any chains above the pavement. Dangling chains can easily create a spark.

Yes, so true! I remember one of the grain farmers asking us not to drive across the field as we normally would have been invited to do, because of the fire hazard. Hot metal under the truck, touching tinder dry grass.

URGHHHH! People who don’t treat the woods/forests like a sacred space should not be there. I cringe when I see smoke starting in a wooded area. Thank God for firefighters who know how to stop the crime as soon as possible – most times. And yes, the forest animals and birds suffer. Sigh. I just read Brad’s beautiful words about forest bathing. I wish the “stupid people” would also.

We get a lot of lightning fires in the mountains, Anneli, but most of the fires near populated areas are the result of human carelessness. We have a huge one in Oregon right now that’s burned almost 100,000 acres and is being battled by 900 firefighters. Cause unknown at this point, but we shall see. I also feel distraught over all the life caught in the flames and smoke. 😦
