The Common Loon

On a small lake in northwestern Washington State, my friend Sonia was kayaking and had a close look at a pair of common loons. One of them is pictured here. I did some digging for information and found out that except for the difference in their size, it is not easy tell male from female at a glance. So whichever it is, he or she would like to chat you up with a poem. Beware! It may be a bit loony.

I swim on a whim

And I’m good with a dive,

I stay slim and trim,

And it keeps me alive.

Spearing fish as I wish,

Or a scared little crab,

I’ll swish a big dish,

Or a wee, tiny dab.

My feet you can’t beat,

‘Cause they paddle quite well,

So sweet and so neat,

And they never will smell.

If lost in the frost,

Time to leave for the sea,

Or be tossed with such cost,

When the cold comes to me.

At sea I feel free,

And I call to my mates,

My plea, “Come to me,”

Seems to open the gates.

That’s a great poem, Anneli! 😊 Yes, loons are like Canada Geese, difficult to tell female from male. Wonderful picture.

I love your poem, Anneli. We have these birds in the UK, but in Scotland, not where I live. We call them Black-Throated Divers.

I just realised that I’ve given a character in my latest book (that I’ve just sent off to the publisher) a name very similar to yours. She’s called Angela, and she’s a duchess. Maybe my subconscious working!

For some reason, I can’t post a reply, so this is a new comment.

Autocorrect just ‘corrected’ Annela to Angela! Grrrr!.

We don’t have these except on very rare occasions when one wanders by, but I have seen a pair — just once. I wish their calls were a common part of our lakes!

They are beautiful birds. Your friend captured it well and I like your poem too. I’ve only ever seen them from a distance 😏

Oh the loon. What a lovely bird. The sight and sound of a loon is classic and beautiful. And this individual was particularly talented with a wonderful verse. Fun post, Anneli.

Anneli, my afternoon is shining even brighter after reading your poem. And, I would never apologize if my outlook for the rest of the day becomes a bit loony.
