Might as well do my nails while I’m watching the walnuts dry.
In the lower level, by the woodstove, the walnuts are bagged and almost ready to be hung above the woodstove to finish drying. I think I’ll have to get another burlap bag or maybe two more, to hold all those nuts as they dry. All the messy work of scraping the black goo from the shells has been done. Now we wait. Most days, I sneak a few to bring out to the squirrels.
I wonder if there will be any walnuts left by Christmas.

Sorry I missed this comment. Yes, she is watching out for them. I’m glad she doesn’t want to eat them.

They’re a lot of work but so delicious and so good for us (and the squirrels), too. Emma looks so cute all curled up there. Cheers.

She’s got a good life. Luckily, she doesn’t like walnuts and it’s safe for me to have them near her.

I think it’s our climate. If it were cold and drier, the husks would pop off cleaner, but when we get cool rain, the thick outer husk gets wet and mushy and then it stains and is sloppy to get off. Probably in a drier climate the green outer husks would split and the walnuts would pop out more easily and cleaner.

I admire your perseverance for what seems like a lot of work.

As I was just telling Jacqui in my comment (seconds ago), I think our wet climate makes it messier and more work. But they are still worth it. So good!

That sounds like a lot of work to get the walnuts prepared. I bet the squirrels love that you share with them.

They do, and it’s a lot of work for them to chew through the shell, so I crack them open for them. That seems to make them happy.

I love walnuts. We’ve had a mast year for acorns this year. They’re everywhere. Millions of them. Looks like you’ve had the same for walnuts.
Pity we can’t eat acorns!

I hadn’t heard that term (mast year) before. Like a bumper crop, I guess

Dear Anneli
We had it warm, too warm for our taste, and relatively dry this year and not as many walnuts as always. But we had masses of figs.
That will be a nutty Christmas

Same here. Too warm and dry until the past couple of weeks. I have one little fig tree and it had a lot of figs on it for the first time too.

The squirrels have a hey day with walnuts in our barn. One day all the green nuts are piled up, and a day or two later, the nuts are shelled. If only you could be a squirrel, right?
