Lincoln’s grandson, Crispin, was as small as a Coffee Crisp bar when I first saw him. He has moved into the woodshed and gets fed most mornings. Unsalted sunflower seeds, hazelnuts, and walnuts are some of his favourite foods.
But in these weeks of drought we’ve had, the most important thing is to have water handy.
I thank you for the sunflower seeds,
Its flavour none can match,
But now my throat is parched and needs
Some liquid down the hatch.
I think there’s water in that tub,
Enough for several sips,
No need to dive in like a sub,
Just need to to wet my lips.
I’ll take one long last look around,
To watch for owl and hawk,
To be scooped up if I were found,
Would be an awful shock.
So quickly now, I steal a slurp ,
Then check again for trouble,
Another slurp and then a burp,
And head out on the double.

One of my fox squirrels does more than drink. Every now and then I catch him lying in the big water bowl, head on one side and tail on the other! Then, the young bluejays show up and run him off.

He’s quite tame, but just wild enough to stay away from the house and to do his own thing.

thank you for this wonderful, pretty and amazing little story. i have drinkies ready for two hedgehogs who pass every night to drink. i live in a rental flat with a patio and i am amazed year after year that in a halfway densely populated housing (8 buildings with 12 flats each) birds and hedgehogs still find their homes and dare nearing us.

That’s so good that you take care of the hedgehogs. We don’t have them around our place but if we did, I’d take care of them too.

I have a sneaky suspicion that they also nibble (devour) my low hanging few strawberries. On that one plant I only have empty stems…. 🍓

I’ve saved them, but I don’t know the first thing about a children’s book with pictures except that it would be expensive to do because of the photos. But thanks for your kind comment, Carol. Have a great day, too.

Oh, Anneli, this is such a cute little squirrel! How wonderful that you have placed a small bowl of water so that it can safely drink. At a neighbor’s house, a squirrel tried to drink from a rain barrel, fell in and drowned. That was very sad.
Greetings from the beautiful Rhine-Highlands / Germany….

Very sweet! Growing up we raised a baby squirrel that had fallen from its nest during a storm and that the mother had abandoned. He had so much personality.

Anneli, your poetry is much needed refreshment on a hot August day. Kudos for taking care of these thirsty tenants. I’m back to writing and blogging after a wonderful trip to my native Montana.

I understand. My parents are 85 and 87, and each trip never seems enough. My wife and I pretty stayed put in Billings and Bozeman. I’m encouraged to return after the winter turns to spring.
