Kokanee Glacier Park

These photos were sent to me by a friend who was visiting Kokanee Glacier Park. He and friends stayed in a nearby cabin and did some hiking and biking.

Below is a glimpse of part of the glacier. Located north of Nelson in beautiful British Columbia, it is a relatively small glacier at 1.7 square kilometers, and getting smaller all the time, as it gradually melts away.

A hike took my friend much closer to the glacier itself.

Time to relax by the lake to take a breather from a bike ride.

A 9-km hike with a 1000-ft rise in elevation gave the group a good workout. If you click to enlarge the picture you can see two red spots in the middle of the picture below; two of the hikers  climbing up ankle-threatening rocks.

All this suffering (just kidding – they call it fun and good exercise) for a closer look at part of the glacier. It looks like it has been melting quite a bit in the last few years.

Back to the cabin for a quick rest and then another climb in the other direction and a look down into the surrounding Selkirk Mountains.

I feel exhausted just thinking about all that hiking and climbing, and I did briefly wonder why they did it. But why does anyone climb a mountain?

Because it’s there!

Climbing mountains is nothing for me, I am not “Schwindelfrei”. I grew up with mountains around me but I never liked them. I love to see the ocean.

Mountain climbing is not for me, I am scared of heights. I rather go swimming in the ocean.
    Nice pictures!

Gorgeous scenery in these photos. Why go hiking, you ask? Solitude, peace, the sound of the wind rushing by and knowing you have nowhere else you have to be. The beauty of nature surrounding you makes you feel there is more to life than TV, computers, driving, shopping, etc. Thanks for sharing these photos and the write up. You’ve brought back so many amazing memories for me. ❤

This is the thing I regret not doing when I was young. I love hiking and climbing, but rarely took the time away to do it. Now, old and with health issues, it’s not feasible.

These are awesome photos. Thanks to your friend for sharing the hiking trip with us. So gorgeous, and must’ve been awe-inspiring to see in person.

I’m sure it takes some effort for these enthusiasts to get it together to do this kind of thing, but once they’re there I’m sure it is worth all the effort. We did a few things in our younger days but nothing as challenging as this.

I enjoyed the guided tour and photos. What a beautiful park but very disturbing to hear how the glacier is melting.

Thanks for sharing your friend’s photos; the Kootenays are so beautiful. I have done some mountain climbing in the past but I’m too old and creaky for it now. The views are spectacular and of course, it keeps you in good shape! Cheers.

The photos are spectacular. Surely they weren’t carrying full camera kits, with huge lenses and such. Or, perhaps the fact that they were hiking more than climbing allowed for a little extra gear. In any event, I sure did enjoy the photos. What a place!

Gorgeous photos and scenery, Anneli. As much as I love to hike, I think I’ll hang out by the lake and enjoy some respite. 🙂

Such a majestic setting! I’ve never visited Glacier National Park in Montana. Sadly, the immense glacial fields continue to shrink there as well.
