First of December, First Snow

Evening darkens, snow clouds loom,

Heavy grayness hovers,

Every creature, filled with gloom,

Looks for extra covers.

Snowflakes drifting in the breeze,

Flutter to the ground,

Blanketing the dens with ease,

Whiteness all around.

Morning sunlight filters through,

Birds emerge from shrubs,

Now they wonder what to do,

Where are all the grubs?

“Where’s my breakfast?” they all cry,

“How will I stay warm?”

Shivering with cold, they sigh,

This is not the norm.

Robins tweet their invitations,

Gathering for flight,

Needing lower elevations,

Snow-free woods in sight.

Holly berries, mountain ash,

Worms and bugs to eat,

Having fled the winter’s lash,

Birds escape defeat.

Though it’s pretty, snow reminds,

How cold it will be,

Warm vacation, I must find,

Lovely sun and sea.

Meanwhile Emma snuggles in,

Fuzzy blanket warm,

Softly curled up to her chin,

“Now bring on the storm.”

Makes me want to snuggle up to Emma. She looks so cozy. We had our first snow on Sunday this week.

I wouldn’t mind a little snow, but I enjoy the cold less and less every year. Ask Emma if there’s room for another under that blanket!

So pretty and a nice poem to accompany it Anneli. So nice when snow tidies up autumns greyness. Still no snow in Edmonton and only rain here in Vancouver. Strange year. Happy Friday. Allan

Beautiful poem Anneli! I love the photos in this post, but as already mentioned, Emma wins the prize. What a sweetheart she is.

I am in awe, Anneli, at your consistent talent. Where do you get all your creativity? Your header is absolutely picture perfect. It’s amazing how a photo depicting a cold, snowy scene can evoke such warmth. Emma has my vote on how to spend a cold wintery day!

Thanks for the poignant verse and tour of your early snow. I love the look of snow, but not the cold!

I was wondering if you had snow. We’re in the rainy season, and I thought (wrong) that you might be too. I hope all the little critters have found cozy spots in the woodshed. Emma looks very comfy. Thanks for the fun poem.

I’m so happy for the warm shed you have for winter lodgers, with the piles of lumber that they can snuggle into (if they’re small enough). And of course, the food you provide.

I am right there with Emma. Let it snow, let it snow! Of course, in central Ohio, winter is guaranteed to bring nearly constant gray skies and not much else. But then . . .
