Just when we got settled, away from the gun,
Along comes this dog, for an innocent run.
“He can’t catch us all,” says an old duck so wise,
“But what if it’s me and it means my demise?”
“Most likely it won’t be, so fear not,” I say,
“Fly up in the air if you’re chicken, and pray.
I plan to stay calm and not show him my fear.”
“In that case I’ll be brave beside you, my dear.”
But flying en masse is not what I prefer,
Wherever I turn, someone tries to deter
My flight path to safety, to freedom, and air.
I’m blocked by the crowds madly flapping up there.
Ah, this is more like it, with just a few friends,
We pick and we scrounge for a few odds and ends,
We don’t crash together in each other’s space,
A wonderful, so much more leisurely pace.

I’ve never seen a group of ducks in flight, the sound must be pretty deafening. Fun poem.

I think they can get quite noisy. Geese are worse!

This duck shouldn´t have fear, the flocks know exactly what they do. Good luck to all of them, soon you can rest. Very lovely poem and nice pictures.

It would be interesting to know what they really think. Thanks for visiting and commenting, Ursula.

I think some of my own ideas might have crept into the poem on that subject.

I love seeing a flock of ducks! You are right, Anneli, a flock of geese are very loud and you don’t want to be under the flock! 🤭

So many ducks flying about. I trust du8ck hunting season is over. Quite the target if not. A great poem Anneli. Have a good Monday. Allan

Thanks, Diana. At certain times of the year this is a fairly common sight.

If I see a group of 20 ducks, it’s a lot.

Great photos, Anneli and your poem evoked the notion that quality is better than quantity and a few good friends is better than a flock of acquaintances. ❤

Thank you, Carol. I was also thinking of city life vs. country life. (Crowds vs. solitude).

I live on an island about ten minutes to downtown Montreal where I am surrounded by Nature and water but can easily get to the city if I want some activity.

Believe it or not, studies have been done on birds’ ‘collision avoidance’ systems. This is just the first article I ran into. It’s easier for the birds to avoid one another than for me to avoid a city crowd — unless I choose a different flight path!

I’ve never seen a flock of ducks like that either. But a flock of geese for sure and yes, the sound is magical and yet a little overwhelming too. The power in numbers.

I love it when they fly over the house. It’s a goose-bumpy feeling even when it’s ducks.

This comment may be a double as I just tried to post a comment but it seemed to go somewhere, not sure where!
Anyway, I just realised that I somehow missed this post. Great photos. Huge numbers of them!
