A No-Name Squirrel

Crispin and Harriet (of Tom, Dick, and Harriet fame) have had a baby – possibly two, but the baby (or  babies) has been scampering around so fast that it’s hard to tell who’s who. For sure we have one whom I’ll call Junior for lack of a name just now. It’s just a step up from No-Name.

Harriet is going crazy, trying to take care of Junior. Doesn’t he know it’s dangerous to be out in the open like that?

“Junior! Junio-o-o-o-r!” she screams. “Get over here!” See her on the stump below, calling Junior?

“But I’m hungry, Ma!” Junior complains.

“Well, come over here and have some sunflower seeds.”

“Here, I’ll try to find one under the jar. Your father is so messy. He tips the jar over and doesn’t even clean up after himself. Yes, here you go.”

“Thanks, Ma.”

Turn on your sound for a quick slice of Junior’s new life.

Can you think of a name for Junior?

Sweet post. I like your little story to go with the beautiful pictures. How about Pepo?

How about Sunny? Squirrels are usually so cautious, but the young ones have not learned about the hazards of life in the open. Happy Thursday Anneli. Allan

So cute! Even though we have a lot of predators in our neighborhood this year, I saw two baby rabbits last night!

Gosh, they are so cute! They were very lucky to find such a beautiful and safe place to live. Junior will learn the rules quickly, I am sure. — Sonja

I see youngsters here from time to time, but I’ve never seen one so small out running around. Most seem to be ‘teenagers’ before I spot them. That said, there’s no mistaking the behavior: fast chases, and plenty of chattering. I’d call this one Ranger, not only because he seems to be Lone (at least for now), and because of his tendency to range beyond what Mom thinks is appropriate.

You’re right about not seeing the squirrels until they look like mini-adults, Linda. The mothers keep them in the nest for another 27 days after they are born. They look like tiny adults when they first “check out the world.”
Ranger is a good name for him too. Thanks.

Two names I can think of are yen (as I have a yen for food) and munchie. 🙂
