My lovely dress of golden leaves
Is tattered now, and worn,
The wind has warned – no more reprieves,
This time the leaves get shorn.
I hold on tight with all my might,
While gusts and gales rip past,
They tear my dress, and though I fight,
I’m nearly bare at last.
I shiver and the last leaves quiver,
Hanging by a thread,
Until they loosen, blowing whither
They know not, and spread.
My golden dress is on the ground,
For all to trod upon,
And scuffing feet will swish it ’round,
While gusts blow ’til it’s gone.

Thanks, Jacqui. I agree. While most people say autumn is a beautiful time of year, to me, it has always been a sad time, seeing all the plants die or go dormant.

It’s sad for the tree to lose its dress, but look at the golden carpet on the ground. Just lovely to behold!

It does look pretty to see that golden carpet of leaves – unless you’re the guy who has to rake them up.

I hate it when the wind takes those gorgeous golden and rust-colored leaves. I’d rather they fall off naturally without the help of those gusts. 😕
We’re getting a little more autumn here, but still not where we should be.

Anneli, I appreciate how your poetry uses this theme. Indeed, autumn leaves us with memories of a former, colorful dress. Yet, every spring the dress will slowly be sown together, leaf by leaf.
