F is for Fawns in the Flowers

In nature, when a mother deer or its fawns need a break, the doe stashes her babies and tells them not to move until she comes back for them.

In the places near the outskirts of town, where houses have encroached on their space, the does bring the fawns to places like my herb garden to put them down for a nap.

“Here,” Mama says. “You lie down and have a nap by this lavender, or over by that big rosemary bush while I go find your brother. Now don’t move and you’ll be safe.”

“Okay, Mama. Ooh! This smells yummy.”

“Ah, there you are, little brother, having a nap by the lemon balm. Come on, my boy. Let’s go back and get your sister.”

“Okay, kids. Just eat the little dandelion leaves. The grass isn’t all that nourishing, but a dandelion salad is good for you.”

F is for fawns eating the weeds by the flowers in my herb garden.

Then I had an afterthought. F could also be for their father. So here you have the mothers and fathers of fawns in the days when they were very hungry and I fed them for a while.

F is for fawns, their fathers, flowers, food, and a fine day.

Great pictures, dear Anneli. Although we must admit we scare the deer away from our garden as they nibble the bark of the shrubs and eat flowers.
    Wishing you a happy weekend

A great sequence Anneli. You have to wonder how deer and moose can get their offspring to stay put, when humans have no similar abilities. 😀Happy Friday. Allan

Haha! Yes, if only children would behave as fawns do. But over so many thousands of years, deer have learned that if they disobey, they won’t live to see tomorrow. Guess we can’t be quite that hard on our kids, but it would be effective … in a few hundred thousand years.

I so love that, the safe place for the fawns. It’s a difficult world too often for them. Thank goodness for this safe haven.

This was a few years ago. Unfortunately we’ve had to build a fence to keep unleashed dogs and their irresponsible owners out. They’ve discovered our neighbourhood a few years ago and now a deer is not safe anywhere near here. It’s a steady stream of people who see a few trees and assume it’s okay to let their dogs run loose. It’s not the dogs’ fault!

Beautiful pictures from your beautiful garden and the tame deer. They must trust you, otherwise they wouldn´t park their kids in your garden. I am impressed. I didn´t know that you are a deer “Fluesterer” (whisperer).

It is remarkable that the fawns know to stay put. Also nice that they just nibbled on the dandelions 😏
