“It sure is a lot of work to pick a hole in a tree and make it big enough for a nest, but I’ve made a good start,” says Nancy Nuthatch.
“Hmm…I wonder if I should go deeper. Can’t make the entrance too big though, or those nasty squirrels will come visiting.”
“Ah, there’s a solution. Nora Nuthatch is making a nest on the lower level. We can take turns keeping an eye out for predators and shriek to call out an alarm if the squirrels come looking for trouble.”
N is for nuthatch, but really we are Nancy and Nora, the Nuthatch Ninjas.
Do you see Nora working on the lower level of the tree?

I do see her! The little nuthatches are so adorable. I’ve always enjoyed watching them. Great captures, Anneli.

They’re friendly birds too, a bit like the chickadees are.

It’s incredible the amount of work they do to peck nesting holes out of trees. Enjoy your weekend too, Allan.

Are they as loud as woodpeckers?

No, not at all (the pecking isn’t noisy), but they do have a cute little call that kind of sounds like “Enk…enk…enk.”

They’re sweet. I think your nuthatches might be the Eurasian nuthatch. They have an extra stripe of white above the eye and are a tiny bit bigger than our rose-breasted nuthatches. Otherwise they are very similar.

It helped a lot that they stood still for their photos.

This is one of the nice things about blogging. We get to share what we have and enjoy seeing and learning about what we don’t have.

I never knew the name of this bird (nuthatch, not Nora 😉) until you and Lynette taught me several years ago. I had gotten a bird feeder when Max died to fill the void. I learned about birds from you two. Those nuthatches are adorable.

Once you start noticing birds you’ll find that you look them up and watch for them and get to know them.
