When it’s hard times with cold, wet weather, and not yet warm bug season, birds will take advantage of what’s available and not be too fussy.
See the feeders all refilled,
On this chilly day,
And the suet is replaced,
“Just in time,” I say.
Tastes a bit like greasy bugs,
Though not quite the same,
Filler of the feeding place,
I’m so glad you came.

It’s a pileated woodpecker. I love seeing them around.

Oh, okay, that’s nice! All birds are beautiful. Ever other day, I dump and clean the birdbaths in the cool morning, I hear the Hummers in the nearby trees in the neighbors yards, I like to say hello or good morning out loud to them. 😉

Good that you put out food for them.

Thanks! Feeding them keeps them around of course but how does such a tiny bird survive the cold nights… 🥶

I don’t know, but they are amazingly tough for such a little bird.

Yes, it’s probably not what he would best like to eat, but it’s good nutrition for him. Great pictures, Anneli.

My red-bellied is coming to the feeders again to snatch peanuts. Our recent drop into the 30s has brought a lot of birds I’ve not seen for a while, like goldfinches and house finches, as well as an abundance of squirrels. As long as it’s cold, I’m a little freer with the amount of feed I put out — and every bit of it gets eaten!

I’m glad you help out the birds when the weather is cold. They need our help at those times.

It always makes me happy to read about these birds having a nice place to eat out.

I’ve never seen a pileated woodpecker at a feeder, I bet it was just what it needed right now. Such beautiful birds!

They don’t usually come and he was only interested in the suet. They’re not seed eaters (that I know of) so I guess that’s why he came for suet.

Our birds love the suet. None of these bright visitors though. He’s very pleased with your diligence. 🙂

Woodpeckers the world over have such a distinctive style about them. The most common species here is the great spotted woodpecker (about the size of a starling) and at this time of year they’re drumming loudly on the trees.
