I know others who have experienced chickadees eating from their hands — what an experience! Mine are too flighty, and I’m not patient enough to spend the time necessary to develop that kind of relationship.
This place was the edge of the local bird sanctuary and people had been feeding birds there for some time. The birds were used to people. We didn’t even have to go far from the parking area, as you can see, to have the birds come for a feed. It feels so great to have a tiny bird trust you so much.
Cool. I’ve often wondered how some people are so friendly/attuned to nature that they will do things like this. I’ve seen others feeding hummingbirds in their hands. Your father in law must have be a kind soul.
Your father-in-law looks so full of bliss feeling the chickadee on his hand. I can relate to that feeling, as I have developed a long time relationship with my feathery friends. While one feeds from my hand, another sits on my tuque patiently waiting for its turn. Great photo and haiku, Anneli!

I just thought he looked so genuinely happy there. I love that picture of him even though it’s a bit blurry.

Such a good memory of your father-in-law Anneli. Having a chickadee alight on your hand is a moment of bliss. Allan

Their little feet tickle your hand and it feels wonderful to be able to get so close to them.

It shows him at a split second of real joy, but it’s also a glimpse into the kind of person he always was.

And that’s what he was. Very kind man. I was so happy to see the look on his face when the bird landed on his hand.
