Oh no, Anneli, for the consequences of seeking comfort over wisdom.

A more poetic way of approaching the annual warnings offered here for the inexperienced: check under the hood before starting your car!

For sure! This rat ducked into the hollow well behind the passenger-side door and ended up going for a ride down to the wharf while the Captain checked his boat. I guess he hoped ratty would jump out when he stopped the truck. When he got home, ratty was still in the truck. He soon met his demise, sad to say. He was kind of cute, but this was the wrong place to camp.

Actually, the truck dealerships have frequently had repair jobs to do on some of the small hoses (such as those that feed the windshield washer fluid) because rats get in there and chew them. They think it may be because the hoses contain some vegetable matter in what looks like a rubber hose. Something used in their construction – maybe a soy product? I don’t remember what it was. Whatever, it was something that rats find tasty.

In Oregon, they take up residence in the car’s air filter. It’s cozy and not quite so dangerous. Poor little creatures do their best.

Definitely short-lived! I’ve known Montana farmers and ranchers to check under the hood before starting up a pick-up truck. There just might be a cat sleeping in harms way.
