I think this is a broad-winged hawk. If anyone knows for sure, I’d be interested in your opinion.
I’m sitting on the railing
To scour the place for prey,
Can’t risk my eyesight failing,
Or I won’t eat today.
What’s that? You think I’m lying?
I’ve eaten well today?
Just sitting ’round, not trying?
My beak gave me away?

This could be a Cooper’s hawk. He has the right colouring and size, I think. Hard to tell for sure. Excellent pictures, though. I love watching raptors.

I guess in the photo there is nothing to compare the size, but he is bigger than a Cooper’s. Otherwise very similar, except he had more white on him than rosy beige. But that would have been my second guess.

It’s a bit harder to tell size from a photo so if this is a larger bird it might be a broad-wing as you first thought. Their tails are so beautiful when they’re in flight.

I wanted him to turn around but he was too shy. He said this was his best side.

Very good pictures of this beautiful hawk. If they only left our little birds alone!

I agree. I’m hoping it was just a poor little mouse, but….

I think he was definitely guilty of murder.

He was right on our front deck and stayed long enough for me to grab the camera. Maybe he was tired and needed to rest a bit.

Merlin’s ID says Cooper’s (juvenile). A beauty! We have a lot of different species around here and they are all so striking.

Interesting. I hadn’t thought about juveniles. So maybe Lynette is right, too. Thanks, Juanita.

I think it’s a Cooper’s hawk too. It’s a handsome bird, nicely photographed.

Is that hawk sitting on the railing of your deck?

Yes, he must have thought he could see if anything moved in our yard.
