There are not as many finches around this year. All our songbird population is down. I don’t know what’s going on with them. But it’s a pleasure to see each and every one of them that comes by here.
I’ve read before about the dropping song bird populations on Vancouver Island. Very alarming and sad. Apparently habitat loss and cats are two big causes but climate change and human activity also enter into it, too. Agreed, it’s a pleasure to see each and every one.
Sorry to hear about the finch decline. Is disease part of it? We’ve had trichomonosis rip through our greenfinch and chaffinch populations here, worsened where they congregate at feeders that aren’t washed often enough.
It seems like all our species are down. Didn’t see any black brant this year and very few last year. I’m hoping they are going up the outside of Vancouver Island rather than on the east coast of the island, but somehow, I worry that it’s more than that. And our little songbirds are just not happening. Chickadees and nuthatches are fewer. I wonder about bird flu or maybe it’s the pesticides. I don’t know.

Sweet little finch and what he says is very true.

He was a cute little guy. I felt bad that he was lonely, but I loved seeing (and hearing) him.

In our area, I would say habitat loss is a big factor, but generally speaking, the birds just don’t seem to be coming here like they used to.

Such a pretty bird. I have one showing up at my feeder very occasionally. His mate may have come along, but I didn’t recognize her.

Numbers are really down in this area. Don’t know why.

Tnx, Diana. I love having finches around. They are so chatty, and often scolding or “holding forth.” Every branch is their soap box.

Our Stellars tend to dominate the airwaves here, but the finches are adorable. 🙂
