They look like pokers for a fire,
I know they are not hot,
Their nectar sweet is my desire,
And that is what I got.
But hotter than the poker’s threat
The stinger of that bee,
If it could sting me, then I bet,
On fire I would be.

I don’t see a bee but I see a hummingbird! They are definitely nectar sippers. Beautiful picture of these “red hot pokers!”

Look straight down the stem of the poker that the hummingbird is sipping from. About halfway down that stem is the bee.

Thanks, Tone. Not sure about the hot trigger finger. I think in this case it’s more like the hummingbird and the bee had their little minds set on that delicious red hot poker and nothing was going to dissuade them – giving me time to get the camera.

I dug these out of a sandy sidehill where a neighbour had tossed her garden discards. They are tough plants and can endure a bit of heat and drought.

I have some rescue rhodos in the yard too. After my neighbour’s baby rhodos on his road frontage were pulled up repeatedly by deer and I repeatedly brought them to him, when I saw him just toss them aside as garbage, I didn’t bother anymore, but gave the uprooted rhodos a home at my place. They are now as HUGE as trees and look beautiful. Their way of saying thanks for rescuing us. Every plant has a story.

I can see the humming bird and with special glasses also the bee, It looks like this beautiful plant is specially done for humming birds. Beautiful pictures and a very fine poem.

I’ve seen hummingbirds dodging bees and yellow jackets at the feeders, so I know they are not fussy about them.
