Thanks to a blogger from Calgary, I know this is a male that you’ve photographed. If you look at the collection of photos in this entry she posted, you can see the difference: the male’s red goes all the way to his bill, while the female’s red covers only a portion of her head. Your ‘boy’ is especially handsome!
Oh, for sure!! Especially if the stump is starting to rot. We don’t remove our rotting tree stumps (we have a few around the edges of the property) because they are the dinner table for the woodpeckers.

What great captures of this fabulous guy with his red head! And a very appropriate poem to go with them. 😊

Are there tiny critters in the stump? I suppose there would be, like under the bark of dead/fallen trees. What a great capture.

There are so many kinds of woodpeckers, but that makes me happy. I love to see them.

I’m always happy when I see the pileated woodpecker visit our yard. He usually announces his visit with a loud call.

Thanks, Debby. I love having these birds around. They’re very entertaining to watch. AND they get rid of ugly bugs.
