These place mats are meant to help teach children how to set the table. I made this set for my nephew when he was about 5 years old. He probably already knew how to set the table, but if he inherited any of my genes, he might have had moments when he forgot what goes where.
Not only do the place mats show where the cutlery goes, but they are also an example of what the three primary colours are. To make a set of four, I had to add another colour for the fourth one. Do you know your primary colours? Which one of the set does not belong?

Red, yellow, blue! And I know why. Green isn’t a primary colour because you can create it by mixing blue and yellow. 😊 Great idea for a pre-schooler, too.

Blue and yellow make green, which isn’t a primary color. I learned that in kindergarten because of fingerpaints, and had the lesson reinforced in our first grade reading circle, where our chairs were red, yellow, and blue.

Perfect idea for the chairs. Thanks for the fingerpainting story. I missed out on fingerpainting as a child, and then as a teacher, I didn’t do much of it with my classes because it was SO messy, and they always want to tap your arm to talk to you.

I wish I’d had a set of those when I was learning where to put the cutlery.

Those place mats are so cute and not only for kids. Naturaly the green colour doesn´t belong there. But it´s a nice way to teach children things about colours.

You’re right about the green not being a primary colour. The place mats were fun to make.

As someone who likes to paint a bit, I should know my primary colours! 😊 And of course blue and yellow make green. Other secondary colours are available!
I wish I’d thought of this idea when my kids and grandkids were small. A brilliant idea.

There is no shortage of kids, V., and you can always make some project for the kids or grandkids of friends. You could make up a place mat of a colour wheel with the primary colours on the inside and the secondary colours in the spaces just outside and between them. Now you’ve got MY wheels turning!

Your placemats are beautiful and educational, Anneli, and green isn’t a primary color. That’s one thing I remember. 🙂
