Guess what I’ve been doing in between trying to get photos of Crispin helping himself to the nuts on our two trees.
It’s that time of year when everywhere you look there is work to do, but you know you’ll be glad you did it later.
The squirrels have been working hard to clean out the nut trees, and I finally decided I should go out there and seriously pick up the fallen nuts, and shake the trees to get more of them down. The pears, apples, and plums are a bonus (from their own trees, of course). May we never go hungry.
Harvest time is very fine,
Though my grapes won’t turn to wine,
Could it be that I’ve been grazing,
Eating all the grapes? Amazing!

So fantastic to have all that bounty from your garden and hazelnuts are delicious! Make no wonder the squirrels love to hang out at your place.

We always like your funny poems, dear Anneli.
WOW, so many nuts. We drown in apples, and as all our neighbours do as well, we compost them. For us, it was a brilliant year for figs – but we have to be quicker than the birds.
All the best

Thanks, KB. Could you make juice from the apples? Some people load up their boxes of apples and take them to a commercial press to make fruit juice. It was a good year for figs here too, but I don’t know what to do with them. I’m not that fussy about eating them as they are. Any ideas? Feed the birds, yes. And thanks for indulging me and reading my poems. They’re not highbrow, but they’re fun to write.

Dear Anneli
Dina feeds the birds with the figs we can’t eat.
With all the apples … The problem is that the last commercial press stopped working about five years ago. So we compost the apples, which is actually quite good because our soil is very alkaline.
All the very best to you

The animals always seem to know where to find food. The squirrels are smart enough to plan ahead and save some.

It is so nice to have all those goodies from the garden. Lots of work but it´s worthwhile. Nice pictures and a fun poem written by a poet.

So right! I complain and sometimes wonder what I was thinking, to have planted all those fruit trees so long ago, but then when the work is done, I’m thankful for the fruit and nuts we can enjoy all winter. Maybe I’m part squirrel!

What does one do with hazelnuts? Do I remember butter from them?

I suppose you could do something like that, but I just freeze the dried, shelled nuts and take them out a few at a time for making cookies, granola, cakes, desserts, whatever.

I was surprised that I managed to get so many in spite of the squirrels being busy for so long already. But it keeps them happy and they stay around, and that makes me happy.

anneli, this is a wonderful story – thank you for sharing it. All the squirrels and birds in your neck of the woods seem to be happy too, hence they are willing to share ‘their’ food with you 😉 great little poem to go with the hard work

When we had our house in France, we had at least 10 nut trees. There, the squirrels are the native red ones. They’re smaller than the grey, but enjoyed the nuts just as much. In the UK our native squirrels have largely been ousted by the introduced greys, except for a few small pockets.
We also had a lot if fruit trees–apples, pears, plums and raspberries. We made apple juice and I made apple chutney. Maybe Klausbernd could try that? But I admit that many of ours fed the birds, butterflies and wasps.
I love your poem,too, Anneli.

I’m sorry to hear that the gray squirrels are becoming so prolific because they are killing off our little red squirrels. They are spreading over Vancouver Island and taking over. Sad to see this. Glad to hear you liked the poem – my bit of fun.
