At first I was looking for a name that rhymed with “bendy,” but maybe subconsciously I was relating it to the German verb “Wenden,” which means to turn or turn over. Just a fluke, I think.
I had to look it up. Pied means two colours, like if you’re wearing a coat with two colours. I also saw a reference to it as meaning “rejected” but that probably comes from the two-colour-coated piper of Hamelin who piped the rats to follow him out of town and then wasn’t paid for his job.
What a lovely cormorant. Ours are plain black. I love your limerick. Wendy is a good name.
Pied appears in the names of several birds. We have a pied wagtail, there’s a pied flycatcher, too, and the ‘pie’ in ‘magpie’ refers to its black and white plumage.

Indeed, a great limerick. Who named her Wendy? 🙂

How did you find out her name? I like the limerick and Wendy as well!

She is “wending” her neck, so Wendy seems a good name for her. Don’t you think so?

Thanks, Helen. Oh, to be that lithe (as long as I didn’t have to look like a bird)!

Sorry. No pie. Just two colours for a pied cormorant. (A two-coloured cormorant).

I know ‘pied’ means something about its appearance, but I’ve lost it.

I used to think it was something religious, like “pious,” but I was way off the mark with that.

And then in revenge, piped the children away.
They disappeared into a cave and were never seen again. Except for a crippled boy who couldn’t keep up, so he escaped.

And that’s probably where the idea of “pied” referring to revenge comes from.

Thank you, Mags. I have to admit, I thought it was a pelican at first, until I noticed the different beak.
