While pruning one of our yew trees, I reached in towards the center, groping for the branch to cut, and felt a bird’s nest, obviously left there late last spring. Hesitantly, I checked for leftover unhatched eggs or dead chicks before I would throw the nest away.
The “eggs” I found in the nest were all cracked open, but they sure looked like hazelnut shells to me.
“Aha! Crispin the Squirrel has been here. I hope he only found the nest after the baby birds had flown.” I reasoned that the hazelnuts would not have been ripe until late fall, and the baby birds would have flown in the spring, so I didn’t think too badly of Crispin for making himself at home in this new dining room of his.
“Uh-ohhh … she found my stash.”

He’s definitely a pampered squirrel but such a sweetie, too!

He works hard at getting his own food, but I add to it just in case he’s ever hungry, especially in the winter.

Awww … Crispin the Squirrel is so cute and a very neat diner, I must say! Those shells are placed so neatly in the nest.

He was tidy in this case, but last spring, he (or his buddies) really made a mess of the plant pots that I had covered up over the winter on the deck. I think they were using them to hide/store food over the winter.

Crispin is gorgeous! My Mum is waging war with squirrels who keep digging up her spring bulbs. Maybe she should just scatter hazelnuts around them!

I wonder if they are the gray squirrels (which also come in a black colour phase). I’m sorry if they are. They kill my little red squirrels.

Crispin is the prettiest squirrel I know. I would say he wanted to bring some little leftovers to the new born birdies. This nest is also a beauty. I hope they can reuse it this coming spring.

I hope he didn’t find the nest until the babies were gone. Squirrels (even the pretty ones) and babies birds are not a good combination.

I can’t blame Crispin, it looks like a cosy place to hang out and snack and I expect it had a great view too!

Yes, that spot had a lot going for it. It’s a careful dance we do, keeping the squirrels around but not tooooooo close.

Crispin was just looking for the best table in the restaurant. Happy Friday Anneli. Allan

How cute that Crispin made himself at home in the abandoned nest. Adorable photos of him and a delightful poem, Anneli. Happy New Year to you and the Captain and all your critters.

What a lovely natural find. And like you, I hope the squirrel stuck to nuts and left the birds alone!

Aw, Crispin is sooo cute! His last name should be Glover, like the actor. 🤭

I don’t think I could stick my hand back in areas like that. I like your logic. I don’t want to be angry with Crispin.
